PLS and Western Union Foundation Match Employee Contribution for Haiti Relief

PLS team members mobilized to make contributions to send to the victims of the Haitian earthquake—an impact that was doubled and then doubled again through matching corporate funds.

“Throughout our company, people were saddened by the reports coming out of Haiti, and very eager to find some way to help,” said Bob Wolfberg, President, PLS. “We set up a process for team members to make contributions through their stores or satellite offices as well as at our Support Center in Chicago.

“Our goal was to raise $5,000, which the company would then match,” said Wolfberg. “We quickly exceeded our goal, and were preparing to make a $10,528.47 contribution to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund. That’s when Western Union got involved.”

The Western Union Foundation had committed to contributing $150,000 toward disaster relief efforts through its Our World, Our Family® program. “PLS is one of Western Union’s top check casher agent partners,” noted Michael Remsted, Director of Strategic Accounts for Western Union. “We quickly offered to match their contribution total with funds from the Western Union Foundation, so their team members’ donations would have quadruple impact.”

With the Western Union Foundation’s matching contribution, the joint effort resulted in a $21,056.94 donation to relief efforts. “With so many people needing food, safe drinking water, medical care and shelter, we’re grateful that we can offer assistance,” said Wolfberg. “I’m proud of the generosity of our team members, and very pleased to be associated with Western Union in this important effort.”
