The Energy Daily and its sister publication Clean Energy Direct announced today the winners of the 2009 Leadership Awards, saluting the most influential energy industry executives and companies of the year.
The annual awards program, open to all corporations, agencies, associations, nonprofits and individuals, recognizes superior editorial during 2009 in six categories: Corporate Leadership, Most Dynamic Energy Practice, Most Innovative Campaign, Most Innovative Technology, Public Policy, and Most Successful New Energy Startup Company.
The Leadership Awards were reviewed be six judges: Llewellyn King, Founder, Executive Producer and Host, “White House Chronicle”and Founder, The Energy Daily; George Lobsenz, Executive Editor of The Energy Daily; Eric Lindeman, Editor, Clean Energy Daily; Brian F. Keane, President, SmartPower; George Sarkisian, Principle and Co-Founder, Environet/PR, and; Roger W. Gale, President and CEO, GF Energy. The judges, took into account objectives, strategy, tactics, execution and results.
Peter Darbee, chairman, president and chief executive officer of PG&E Corp., is the winner of The Energy Daily’s Corporate Leadership award for 2009 in recognition of his success in making his company a national leader in the development and deployment of the innovative clean energy, efficiency and smart grid technologies.
In the category of Most Innovative Campaign, the award went to Arizona Public Service for its eye-catching advertising campaign to educate its customers about its planned Solana Generating Station, a 280-megawatt concentrating solar power to be built near Gila Bend, Ariz.
Most Dynamic Energy Practice went to Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP, led by Clint Vince, chair of its global energy practice, for its legal advocacy and regulatory expertise in key hydropower, renewable energy, nuclear energy and electricity ratemaking cases.
In the highly competitive category of Most Innovative Technology, the judges selected as the winner National Semiconductor’s SolarMagic Power Optimizer, a pioneering electronics device that enhances and assures power production from solar panel arrays shaded by trees or other sunlight obstructions that otherwise might significantly reduce electricity output.
For leadership in the public policy arena, Charles Curtis, head of the Nuclear Threat Initiative, was chosen for achievements over the course of his long and distinguished career in senior energy and national security policy posts in government and the private sector.
In the category of Most Successful New Energy Startup Company, the judges picked L’Anse Warden Electric Co., which restarted a long-dormant coal-burning power plant on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in 2009 after transforming it into a clean energy facility that co-fires with renewable biomass, reducing emissions by 50 percent from previous operations.
Llewellyn King summarized the program, stating, “I was honored to be asked to judge The Energy Daily’s competition. We, the judges, chose what we thought were the best-of-the-best; but that doesn’t mean that there wasn’t an abundance of excellence among the rest”.
