Maritime Protective Services, Inc. (MPS) announced today that it is accepting registrations for its upcoming Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA)/International Ship and Port Facility (ISPS) Code training courses for certification as Security Officers in the maritime transportation industry. MPS' Combined Vessel/Company/Facility Security Officer (VSO/CSO/FSO) Course, which has been approved by the US Maritime Administration and the US Coast Guard, will be offered in Boca Raton, Florida, April 6-9 and June 8-11, 2010. The Company's Port Facility Security Officer Course, which has been approved by the Transportation Security Directorate of the UK Department for Transport, is being given in Poole, Dorset, United Kingdom, February 23-25, March 23-25, April 27-29, May 18-20, and June 22-24 of this year.
Both courses are based on model courses promulgated by the International Maritime Organization, the specialized agency of the United Nations for the shipping industry, and fully meet the training requirements established in the MTSA implementing regulations, or the ISPS Code, for supervisory personnel who will serve as Security Officers. They offer a blend of up-to-date threat information, effective security practices, accurate regulatory provisions, and risk-based assessment techniques, delivered through a balance of lectures, multimedia presentations, interactive activities, group exercises, and knowledge assessment. The US Combined Course also includes detailed training on the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) regulations.

Those who successfully complete the courses will receive a a US or UK Government approved certificate and will be awarded Continuing Education Units by the Florida Institute of Technology. The VSO portion of the Combined Course offered in the US meets the standards certification of proficiency for Ship Security Officer as set forth in the International Convention for Standards on Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers of 1978.
