Sunquest Collection Manager™ increases patient safety through accuracy and timeliness

Sunquest, a leading provider of healthcare diagnostic information technology and outreach solutions, announced today that the University of Virginia Health System Medical Laboratories, in Charlottesville, Virginia, has licensed Sunquest Collection Manager™ automated specimen collection solution. UVA selected Collection Manager as part of a technology update designed to increase patient safety via improvements to accuracy and timeliness in the specimen collection processes.

Collection Manager™ is a module of Sunquest’s popular Sunquest Laboratory™ solution. Collection Manager delivers a handheld, positive patient identification application that verifies the patient, the lab test order, provides relevant clinical information to the care provider regarding the specimens to be collected, and prints labels—all at the point of care. Collection Manager can easily support phlebotomists and both centralized and de-centralized nursing-based specimen collection teams, from critical and emergency care to ambulatory environments.

“We convened a broad-based task force to study the available automated specimen collection options and selected a solution that would meet our needs,” said UVA’s project manager coordinator Richard Pott. “We have been successfully using Sunquest software for more than 20 years and the task force was convinced that adding the Collection Manager module would provide us with the additional patient safety benefits we were seeking, and be easy to implement.”

The University of Virginia Medical Center is a nationally renowned academic medical center that integrates a network of primary and specialty care. The system includes a 500-bed hospital and numerous clinics on the University of Virginia, throughout Charlottesville, and in neighboring counties. The Medical Laboratories of the UVA Medical Center provide modern, cost-efficient, and competitively priced laboratory tests to the inpatients of the University Hospital and its affiliated institutions, to outpatients within and outside of the University, and to contracting organizations.

“We are pleased that the University of Virginia Health System Medical Laboratories has selected our Collection Manager solution,” commented Kelly Feist, vice president of marketing for Sunquest. “After implementing Collection Manager, our customers have consistently reported achieving significant across-the-board successes in their collection processes, including zero mislabeled specimens, eliminating redundant testing, processes, and steps, reducing staffing requirements, and logging faster turnaround times.”
