While many new and not-so-new websites struggle to attract sufficient traffic, even with paid advertising, a recipe website has succeeded in building a following purely by word of mouth, online and offline.
http://www.tried-and-tested-recipes.com/ ranks within top 0.3 percent of all websites in the world, according to Alexa, a California based subsidiary company of Amazon.com which provides data on browsing behavior and web traffic.
Perhaps not surprisingly, given the website is English-language based, over half of its traffic comes from the United States of America. However, in January 2010 alone, the website managed to reach audiences in the following 29 countries from all over the world:
USA, Great Britain (UK), Russian Federation, Canada, Dominican Republic, Netherlands, Indonesia, Spain, India, Germany, China, Singapore, Romania, Ukraine, Ireland, Australia, France, Egypt, Philippines, Hong Kong, Greece, Italy, Belarus, Denmark, Brazil, Viet Nam, Malaysia, Luxembourg and the Republic of Korea
The author of the website attributes its success to the following:
1. The site contains free content that is much in demand - delicious recipes that have been tried and tested to work, illustrated by attractive photos. There are recipes for everything from casual family dinners to elegant dinner parties. Moist banana bread, tiramisu, strawberry pavlova, roast beef and slow-cooked lamb shanks are among its most popular recipes. Navigation around the site is clear and intuitive, with recipes grouped according to its main ingredients. There is also a search bar to help visitors find their recipes quickly.
2. The website is powered by the SBI! website building and hosting solution. Even with no prior experience of website building, the author, a "work at home mom", got off to a flying start by following the clear and simple action plan that comes with the SBI! package, which contains a step-by-step guide to writing great content, getting noticed by the search engines and creating sustainable traffic. Many of the website's recipes rank within top 30 of search results returned by major search engines including Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask.
3. The inclusion of interactive capabilities(SBI! 2.0) allows visitors to upload their own favorite tried and tested recipes and photos - these are then reviewed and included in the site. In this way, the site is used as “online family cookbooks” or recipe repositories for many which further allows its traffic to spread virally by word of mouth.
According to a survey conducted by netcraft.com, there were 230,443,449 websites in the world in October 2009. While many websites, estimated by some to be over 70 percent, attract little or no traffic and eventually fail within a few of years of being launched, http://www.tried-and-tested-recipes.com achieved ranking within top one percent of all websites within the first few months of being launched.
It would appear that other website owners have also found success with SBI!. According to the company, almost half of its customers buy more than one site. Many go on to buy their third and fourth sites and renewal rates are very high. Ease of use and excellent technical support are some of the reasons cited for customer loyalty.
