SOASTA, the leader in cloud testing, today announced the release of the SOASTA Performance Test Methodology™ for testing web-scale systems to optimize the performance of their online applications. Despite the attention given to the poor performance and reliability of websites in the last few years, popular websites continue to slow down and even crash, often under expected traffic conditions. What happens now that companies need to respond to the unexpected peaks that come from social networking, external events or promotions, such as the Super Bowl? How can companies accurately test dynamic applications at web-scale, often running in complex infrastructures?
Based on over two years of experience testing from the cloud and leveraging existing best practices and proven performance testing methodologies, SOASTA CloudTest® is the first product to be incorporated into this methodology and extend traditional approaches to address the new opportunities and challenges presented by cloud testing. These include:
- Testing live web-based applications in production
- Leveraging the Cloud to test at both typical and peak traffic levels, from hundreds of users to millions
- Responding to the acceleration of development cycle times by making agile performance testing a realistic alternative
- Generating geographically dispersed load to most accurately represent real-world traffic
- Generating both internal and external load and using both the lab and production environments for the most efficient and effective results
- Analyzing Performance Intelligence in real time to speed problem resolution
“We are very excited to bring the SOASTA Performance Test Methodology to web applications,” said Tom Lounibos, CEO, SOASTA. “Over the last two years we’ve built and executed tests unprecedented in terms of their size and effectiveness. Just in the last few weeks we used the SOASTA methodology to help a number of companies prepare their live sites for the Super Bowl, including Denny’s which saw its traffic grow by nearly 1700% on Super Sunday due to their free breakfast offer. The SOASTA Methodology gave these companies the actionable information they needed to successfully prepare for and handle traffic spikes associated with the event.”
The SOASTA Performance Test Methodology is a software QA performance testing strategy with a set of lightweight processes that fit into the software development lifecycle and ensure that online applications are ready for peak usage. The methodology includes testing applications in a lab environment inside of the firewall and processes for testing the production infrastructure used by customers. In addition to testing for baseline performance metrics, the methodology includes failure, duration, spike and break-point testing. It covers standard development lifecycle steps, from requirements gathering through to delivery, with ongoing measurement through iterative cycles.
“When representing some of the most recognizable brands in eCommerce and retail you're expected to deliver high quality results in every aspect of an engagement,” said Dave Abbott, VP of Technology, Irdeto. “This includes validating the performance and reliability of their website prior to going live with a new event or promotion designed to drive site traffic. Working with SOASTA, and leveraging their methodology, allows us to easily and affordably test client sites under anticipated and extreme levels of use. The speed at which SOASTA can deliver a meaningful, on-demand performance test is nothing short of amazing."
SOASTA’s Performance Test Methodology increases confidence in the reliability of eCommerce and other revenue generating and mission critical sites. Promotions and events can change the normal profile of traffic and the only way to ensure operational excellence is to test for the best case. For example, SOASTA recommends testing up to 2 to 3 times expected peak loads to account for unexpected spikes or to mitigate the impact of infrastructure outages.
“Our customers depend on CSC to deliver high quality business solutions and services,” said Brian Boruff, Vice President of Cloud Computing, CSC. “We are pleased to have SOASTA as an alliance partner. Web scale performance testing is the perfect complement to CSC's proven testing methodology for providing high value, end-to-end solutions for our customers; and to ensure ongoing website performance and reliability."
“Having a methodology for testing large externally generated load is critical, particularly as mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets become more pervasive, driving more traffic to web sites,” said Thomas Murphy, Research Director, Gartner. “Testing at web-scale and against production websites is still relatively new. A methodology based on experience and best practices is an important element in its adoption and success.”
SOASTA’s mission is to ensure that today’s websites and applications are highly reliable and scalable. The company’s product, SOASTA CloudTest®, delivers performance intelligence by capturing data about all the elements that impact a website and immediately turning it into actionable information. Leveraging a unique, real-time analytic engine built exclusively for testing web and mobile applications, SOASTA CloudTest enables quality assurance and development teams to test and monitor their websites under both typical and extreme traffic conditions, at an affordable price. SOASTA CloudTest is available on-demand or as an appliance. SOASTA is privately held and headquartered in Mountain View, California.
