Leading Cloud-based Web Content Filtering Service First to Offer Category to Help Education Customers Combat Academic Fraud.

OpenDNS, provider of the world’s leading Internet navigation and security services that make networks safer, faster, smarter and more reliable, today announced it has added a new category, Academic Fraud, to its cloud-based Web content filtering service. OpenDNS is the first Web content filtering service that does not require an appliance to provide the highly important category.

OpenDNS Web content filtering services are today used by more than 25,000 school districts around the world, including some of the United States’ largest like Baltimore City Public Schools, Detroit Public Schools and San Diego Public Schools, to make the Internet safe and achieve CIPA compliance. In addition, thousands of colleges and universities rely on OpenDNS to secure their networks and keep their students and staff safe online.

Academic Fraud – including plagiarism, the buying and selling of papers and reports and other forms of cheating – is a problem plaguing academic institutions around the world. By preventing students from accessing the fraud sites on the school networks, academic institutions can add a simple and effective first line of defense to their effort to prevent academic fraud of all kinds.

“OpenDNS is firmly committed to listening to our 15 million users around the world and providing first and foremost the features and functionality they want. This is particularly true for our education customers, who are faced with the challenge of keeping students safe online,” said OpenDNS CEO David Ulevitch. “We’re proud to be first to market with the Academic Fraud Web content filtering category delivered through the cloud and invite school districts, colleges and universities using appliances from Blue Coat and Websense to compliment their existing solutions and add OpenDNS for a more secure network.”
