24 Hour Fitness, the largest privately owned U.S. fitness chain and a health club industry pioneer, announced a partnership with Dominique Wilkins, a nine time NBA All-Star and one of the greatest scorers in NBA history, to operate a series of youth basketball camps in Austin, Texas and Honolulu, Hawaii. The youth basketball camps will roll out into three 24 Hour Fitness clubs (see list below) in early summer 2010 with anticipation of additional camps in other cities being scheduled in the future.

The Atlanta Hawks’ vice president of basketball, Wilkins is a sportscaster on Sportsouth and FSN South and a long-time supporter of programs that promote youth fitness and healthy lifestyles.

"The goal of the camps is to teach kids how to play the game the right way… - including how to play on the ground and in the air," shared Wilkins. "It's a combination of skill, fitness and mindset which impacts their long-term development as basketball players and individuals."

Wilkins sees the relationship with 24 Hour Fitness as another avenue to follow his passion of helping individuals of all ages to be healthier through diet and fitness. A type 2 diabetic, Wilkins is an ambassador for Novo Nordisk's "Changing Diabetes" campaign, has testified before Congress on the need of a national strategy to help reduce diabetes, and he works very closely with the Center for Health Transformation and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to help those affected by diabetes.

"Dominique is very selective on the opportunities he lends his name to," says Steve Haney, Wilkins’ attorney and business manager. "It has to make a difference and provide value to the participants. 24 Hour Fitness has a great model of meshing professional athletes with camps to provide an excellent experience for the participants."

Haney, practices with the Lansing office of Foster, Swift Collins & Smith, P.C. After retiring from professional basketball, he spent 4 years operating the entire basketball division at Magic Johnson Management and has 10 years experience representing NBA and elite European players.
