It’s new. It’s fun. You can do it at home or work. And it gives you immediate feedback on how well you know the latest racing rules. In their continuing effort to find better ways to teach the racing rules of sailing, UK-Halsey has just introduced something new: UK Quick Test. It’s an added feature to the UK Rules Quiz Program, which have long been highly regarded by competitors and judges for the clarity of its situational animations and explanations.
UK-Halsey’s chief rules guru, Charles “Butch” Ulmer, said, “We developed a multiple choice test designed to help sailors apply the rules to common race-course scenarios. Instead of trying to 'catch' people with tricky questions, we want them to learn the rules of common situations so that they will immediately know their rights and obligations when they get into similar situations on the race course.”
Upon finishing the 37-question test, the answers are tabulated and a scoresheet plus the percentage of correct answers are immediately shown. Users can then click on the question number to see a detailed explanation of the correct answer. Users can take the test as many times as they want. To find out how their score ranks against the average score, they just need to e-mail their score to rules(at)ukhalsey(dot)com
The complete UK-Halsey Rules Quiz program, including the new Quick Test feature, is available as a download only from the UK-Halsey online store for $55, or $40 for those upgrading from a previous version of the program. It is UK-Halsey’s plan to keep adding Quick Tests to this program. These additions will be shorter, themed tests that have to do with situations at sections of the race course, e.g., starting line rules, rules at the windward mark, rules associated with obstructions, and so forth.
Even though the animated rules quizzes are available for free online at the UK-Halsey website, owners of the program get exclusive content, which includes the Quick Test, videos of Butch Ulmer teaching rules seminars, a blog and much more. The program is constantly updated with new quizzes and new features at no additional charge.
Some early comments about the program and test include. A good tool to test your knowledge and understanding of the rules,” wrote Jos Spikerman in his rules newsletter Look to Windward. “With the correct answers, a comprehensive and clear explanation is provided. So you learn from your mistakes. For those of you who are serious in learning the RRS, the UK-Halsey Rules Quiz program is very good tool.” User Barry Fox recently commented, “What a great addition to an already great package! I really enjoy the videos as well. I think Butch has a great presentation quality and his very matter-of-fact way of explaining things is right up my alley.”
