Pearson's Math Programs Match Resources to Student Readiness, Differentiate Instruction with Quantile Measures.

The education services and technology company Pearson today announced its collaboration with MetaMetrics®, developer of The Quantile Framework® for Mathematics, to assign Quantile® measures to its core middle and high school math courses.

The Quantile Framework is a scientific approach to measuring a student's ability to think "mathematically" about a variety of skills, concepts, and applications. Quantile measures enable educators to monitor a student's development in math, target instruction, forecast understanding, and improve mathematics achievement.

"With only 39 percent of eighth-grade students scoring proficient on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), we know that America's students are still struggling to keep up with their international peers. To help move the educational needle, Pearson is committed to personalizing learning and meeting the needs of every child," said Mike Evans, Pearson's senior vice president for math. He added, "That's why we're working with MetaMetrics to ensure our teachers have access to actionable information to differentiate their instruction and make a difference in the classroom."

Pearson programs with Quantile measures will include Connected Mathematics; CME Project: Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Precalculus; Prentice Hall Mathematics: Courses 1, 2, and 3; and Prentice Hall Mathematics: Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. MetaMetrics will calibrate each lesson in these textbooks to the Quantile Framework to obtain an accurate Quantile measure for the lesson. The Quantile measure represents the difficulty of the skill or concept being taught and the demand on student ability required to learn it. The Quantile measures of the lessons, as well as the skills or concepts associated with them, are freely available at http://www.Quantiles.com.

"With Quantile measures, every child can learn at his or her own pace along a developmental path, marked with achievable milestones. When students are presented with mathematical tasks that are too hard or too easy, growth is limited. However, by using the Quantile Framework, teachers can differentiate instruction within their classrooms based on students' learning needs," said Malbert Smith III, Ph.D., president, MetaMetrics.

Previously, Pearson and MetaMetrics collaborated on the development of Progress Assessment Series (PASeries) Mathematics, enabling students in grades 3-8, and those studying Algebra I, to receive a Quantile measure from the formative assessment. Similarly, many of Pearson's English and Language Arts assessments, including Stanford 9 & 10, Stanford Diagnostic Reading, and PASeries Reading, can report student reading ability as a Lexile® measure as one of the reporting options. Lexile measures enable educators, parents, and students to select materials that can improve reading skills and monitor growth in reading ability.
