Millwood, NY (PRWEB) February 18, 2010
Webster Bank, N.A., a subsidiary of Webster Financial Corporation (NYSE: WBS), has donated $10,000 to the Emergency Food Distribution Program of the Food Bank for Westchester.
Christina Rohatynskyj, Executive Director of the Food Bank for Westchester, said that last year’s average increase in demand for food was about 15 percent. “Since June 2009, we have seen an increase in demand of 18 percent. Webster’s generous donation to our Emergency Food Distribution Program will enable us to support local families that are hungry or at risk of becoming hungry,” she said.
“When the food banks are in need, we find a way to respond,” said Brendan Sachtjen, Webster’s regional president for Westchester and Fairfield County, Conn. “With unemployment remaining high across our four-state market area, our neighbors need help now more than ever.”
Kathy Luria, Webster’s vice president, community affairs, said Webster places an emphasis on supporting organizations that serve those who need a helping hand to secure food, shelter and develop economic self-reliance.
In the fourth quarter of 2009, Webster gave more than $169,000 to help feed the hungry across its four-state market area, which includes Westchester County, N.Y., Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
The Food Bank for Westchester, one of eight food banks in New York State, acquires, warehouses and distributes food to 200 Westchester County hunger relief organizations, including food pantries and soup kitchens, among others. These efforts feed some or all of the 200,000 people in Westchester who are hungry or at risk of hunger. The Food Bank mission is supported by an extensive donor and volunteer network.
