4 Years On ... And When The Going Got Tough, The Ladies Kept Networking

This year, Athena, the premier networking organisation for women in business celebrates its fourth birthday, its new international launches, its continued growth in a tricky market but most of all its members!

Incorporated 4 years ago, Athena attracted within a very short time a solid core membership. These included solicitors; financial advisers; IT specialists; doctors; trainers; publishers; graphic designers; insurance brokers; photographers; writers; product developers; business consultants; architects; interior designers; educational specialists and a wide variety of highly qualified remedial practitioners. In fact it’s probably safe to say that whatever treatment, service or product you can think of, the team at Athena Head Office can lay their hands almost instantly on just the right woman to supply it.

A powerful resource indeed and a hugely diverse range of professional skills and expertise, women sharing the common conviction that time and care invested in making personal contacts, brings business through the door far more efficiently, consistently and cost effectively than any other means. it’s this irrefutable fact that has allowed so many members to successfully weather the economic downturn. The name of the game is support and whilst a referral that results in business for someone else may not bring immediate financial rewards for the referee – it breeds goodwill and good connections. Six weeks, six months or a year down the line that referral is usually repaid from the same or another source - a great example of sustainable business through good times and bad.

Running the company as a franchise model, has allowed substantial growth on two levels with increasing membership as well as the sale of area franchises. Evidence of how well and widely the word has spread is demonstrated by the 2009 Athena, Sydney, Australia launch and the imminent setting up of the first Melbourne groups. Later in 2010 Athena will the crossing of the Atlantic to plant the flag in the United States where businesswomen are already signing up to join.

Jacqueline Rogers (Athena Founder and CEO) comments ‘Members continue to surprise and amaze me both with the support they offer to others and in the corresponding results they’re seeing for their own businesses. I’ve just come back from a lunch meeting where IT specialist, Sharon Ensbury (wsicaptivatingwebsolutions.com) announced she’d invested in a sales team who’d proved far more proactive than she’d ever expected. When asked how she’d laid hands on such paragons she laughed and pointed at individuals round the table who’d passed on more referrals in the past year than any previously employed (and expensive) marketing experts.

Jane Milton, (thefoodnetwork.co.uk) a staunch Athena member and self-labelled serial networker comments that women are good at networking because it’s in the genes – we can’t really help ourselves, we’re just natural ‘fixers’!
