42% of the Predicto Mobile Community thinks the U.S. will get the gold in men's hockey -- yet an equal percentage say silver is a more likely goal.

As the first week of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics draws to a close, sports fans have been privy to both awe-inspiring performances and utter surprises. In part due to NBC’s quixotic television coverage, you never really know what you’re going to see as each event unfolds, yet it’s always tempting to make predictions. One of the most popular SMS communities, Snackable Media's Predicto Mobile, is text messaging votes on their Olympic hunches. Several of Predicto’s top polls are centered on the Winter Games’ biggest personalities and closest medal races.

This year's Olympic host, Canada, has always shared a healthy rivalry with the U.S., especially when it comes to winter sports. However, America is currently outpacing the Canucks in the overall medal race. With bragging rights at stake for both countries, 82% of Predicto Mobile's voters believe the USA will maintain their lead over their North American neighbor. Furthermore, the majority of the Predicto Mobile community predicts that more than 25 gold, silver and bronze discs will ultimately be bestowed to American athletes.

Superstar athlete Apolo Ohno is no stranger to the podium. The season 4 champion of "Dancing with the Stars" also scored three medals for speedskating at the 2006 Winter Games. The Predicto Mobile community believes Apolo will earn a medal in all four events he's participating in at this year's Olympics, with 65% voting that Apolo will overtake his previous record.

Skating to Olympic glory isn't always so easy. Figure skater Sasha Cohen should know: the 2006 silver medalist launched an unsuccessful comeback to compete in Vancouver. Understandably, it was not received very well when Cohen recently asserted to the press that the young women who did make the U.S. team, Mirai Nagasu and Rachael Flatt, would not medal. Perhaps indicating that Cohen should leave the predictions to the Predicto community, 71% of voters dismiss Sasha's contention as sour grapes.

After voting, one member even texted this comment: "Despite her spoilsport negativity, the U.S. team has enough talented skaters to win at least a few medals even without primadonnas like her."

No one would mistake the men's U.S. hockey team for divas. The hard-working squad, comprised of an impressive array of NHL stars, is hoping to win a gold medal for the first time since 1980 (when Team USA beat Russia in the fabled "Miracle on Ice"). There's a good chance a medal indeed is in the team's future, but which one is debatable. At press time, 42% of the Predicto Mobile Community thinks the U.S. will get the gold in men's hockey -- yet an equal percentage of voters say that silver is a more likely goal.
