Author reveals life in 1960s Australian outback

Author Viviana Huwald lived in northwestern Australia in the 1960s, at a time when ore was newly discovered in the iron-filled mountain range. With her husband and their toddler son, Huwald began a life in a remote and backwards town. Years later, she would narrate her experiences of the modest but memorable life she led in the town called Tom Price.

Before the author lived in Australia, she called home some of the most fashionable suburbs in the world. She spent part of her childhood in Alexandria, Egypt, enjoyed the scenic ambiance of Naples, Italy, lived in a quaint Swiss cottage in Lausanne, and dwelled in the ancient historic city of Palermo, Sicily.

In all these places, the young Viviana enjoyed the sights and sophistication that the cities offered. She reveled in walking down the café-lined streets, admired by the smartly-dressed people she passed by. Life was truly stylish and exciting.

The move to Melbourne came as a shock to the young fashionista. Australia in the early 1960s felt like a cemetery when compared to gaiety and sparkle of Italy. But it was there that the author found love—in the person of a German draftsman.

They moved to Tom Price, a town on a mountain range of the same name, two years after their child was born. So begins Huwald’s engaging experiences in the community where everybody knows everything about anybody, and where the moonlight provides ample lighting in the dark of night.
