HC Piper Manufacturing Inc shipped in record time a Vapour Recovery Unit (VRU compressor) for Shell. The company supplied the system to the Shell facility in Peace River, Alberta. This plant produces Bitumen and Asphalt from Oil Sands. The VRU supplied was based on the liquid ring design of a unit that had been supplied previously in the 1980’s and is still working well! Hamish Ferguson P.Eng., VP Engineering, who was responsible for the original design as well as the new unit, said ”It is always satisfying to see proof that our design concepts work well for our clients and systems provide great service with minimal downtimes.”
The VRU had to be designed to fit into an existing space within a building, which presented many challenges in ensuring that equipment access was maintained despite having a small floor area to work with. The VRU was mounted on a skid containing (2) liquid ring compressors which were taken from HC Piper stock, as well as heat exchangers, vessels and all other necessary equipment to take the hot wet vapours from the storage tanks. The vapours will be compressed for further processing, and in addition the unit will recover heavier hydrocarbons (diluent) as liquid.
Shell required the oilfield vapour recovery system to be delivered in record time.
