Best-selling children’s book author, editor and educator Emma Walton Hamilton has announced the release of Just Write For Kids! - a new online home study course for aspiring children’s book authors. Regardless of their level (starting from scratch, preliminary idea or work in progress), participants in this 8-week course will complete a picture book manuscript ready to take to the next level. Writers will also gain a thorough understanding of the craft, and skills for navigating the competitive children’s book marketplace.
The course is delivered weekly, via email installments, and may be taken at any time. Participants receive one email per week for eight weeks, each featuring a specific lesson and corresponding assignments on such topics as character development, theme, plot structure and narrative. They also receive a host of additional benefits, including an editing checklist against which to measure manuscripts, Walton Hamilton’s Writer’s Resource list, and a $50 gift certificate toward any further editorial services, such as an editorial evaluation or comprehensive line edit of a manuscript.
Emma Walton Hamilton is a best-selling author, editor, arts educator and arts and literacy advocate. She has co-authored twenty children’s books with her mother, Julie Andrews, five of which have been on the New York Times best-seller list, including the recent anthology Julie Andrews’ Collection Of Poems, Songs, And Lullabies (illustrated by James McMullan); the Dumpy The Dump Truck series of picture books, board books and Early Readers (illustrated by Tony Walton); the original fable Simeon’s Gift; the middle grade novel The Great American Mousical and THANKS TO YOU – Wisdom From Mother And Child (#1 New York Times Bestseller). Emma’s own book, Raising Bookworms: Getting Kids Reading for Pleasure and Empowerment, premiered as a #1 best-seller on Amazon.com in the literacy category and won silver medals from the Living Now and IPPY Book Awards in the parenting category. It also received Honorable Mention from ForeWord Magazine’s Best Book of the Year.
Emma is Editorial Director for The Julie Andrews Collection, a publishing program dedicated to quality books for young readers that nurture the imagination and celebrate a sense of wonder. In addition, she is a faculty member for Stony Brook Southampton’s MFA in Writing and Literature Program, where she is Co-Director of the Children’s Literature and Playwriting Conferences, and Executive Director of YAWP (the Young American Writers Project), an inter-disciplinary writing program for middle and high school students on Long Island. In addition to writing and editing children’s books, Emma also works as a freelance children’s book editor and teaches courses in writing for children at Stony Brook Southampton. “Writing children’s books is every bit as joyful and rewarding as people imagine it to be,” says Walton Hamilton. “I feel truly blessed to have made a life for myself in this genre. When I was starting out, I would have benefited so much from a course such as this, since between family and professional commitments, I seldom have the time or resources to travel anywhere to study. I’ve focused on making this course as content-rich as possible, so that participants will get maximum value for a minimum investment, and can realize their writing dreams from the comfort of their own homes.”
