During American Heart Month, reducing stress is one way we can prevent heart attacks. According to Dr. Patterson, “Our blood pressure can rise with mental stress and we are not even aware of it. One study reported that people are six times more likely to have a heart attack or other severe heart events, than people who handled their stress more calmly. Exercise, nutritional evaluation, chiropractic care and the development of strategies to work on the psychological aspects of stress, are all necessary to bring balance to our lives,” said Dr. Patterson.
While exercising may reduce stress, sticking with a program is not easy to do. “How many times over the years have you started a program, only to find yourself right back where you started?” asked Patterson. “Have you ever stopped to ask yourself why? Instead of asking why you failed, I believe we need to start by asking a more insightful question: Why did you start the program in the first place?”
Patterson added that when you tell someone that you plan to lose weight or begin an exercise program, they usually encourage you and tell you how great it is. “We all enjoy the initial attention,” said Patterson. “Our egos are stroked and it motivates us for a while, but what happens when people get used to seeing the new you? When the compliments slow down or stop, do you stop?”
