San Jose, CA (PRWEB) February 25, 2010
Henley-Putnam University is proud to announce that alum Gregory Smith has been selected National Outstanding Graduate by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). DETC's 2010 Outstanding Graduates and Famous Alumni book salutes the unique men and women who represent more than two million distance education students now studying with DETC member institutions.
"We're thrilled for Gregory and this tremendous honor," said Michael Corcoran, PhD, Henley-Putnam University president and former U.S. Secret Service Special Agent. "DETC has acknowledged the work of distance learners for decades, and we appreciate their support for Henley-Putnam students working diligently toward successful careers in Strategic Security."
After returning from a high-priority Special Operations mission in Iraq, Gregory Smith chose Henley-Putnam because of its unique curriculum addressing the complex subject of terrorism. He graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor's of Science in Terrorism and Counterterrorism Studies and was named to the President's List as top graduate in his class.
Because of his experience and academic knowledge, Gregory is frequently invited to give lectures within the Joint Special Operations community. He is the senior Air Force Special Operations instructor at the Joint Special Operations Senior Enlisted Academy, a member of the Association of Security and Counterterrorism Professionals, and part of the Delta Epsilon Tau international honor society. He has also authored several articles featured in the Journal of Strategic Security.
In acknowledgement of this honor, Gregory Smith will be recognized for his outstanding contribution to society at the DETC's 84th Annual Conference in Del Mar, California this April.
Since 1983, the Distance Education & Training Council, which is recognized by the United States Department of Education and CHEA, has enacted a yearly recognition and awards program in conjunction with the respective universities accredited by the DETC, like Henley-Putnam. Now in its 27th year, the National Outstanding Graduate & Famous Alumni program recognizes the high achievements of millions of students who have graduated from an accredited distance learning institution. Criteria for the highly competitive program include academic records, quality of contribution to society, and chosen profession.
Henley-Putnam University is approved for use of Veteran benefits and supported by DANTES, the American military's off-duty voluntary education program. The University is a member of Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) Consortium, the American Council on Education (ACE) and the Council of College and Military Educators (CCME). Henley-Putnam advisors work closely with military students to evaluate their previous education, training, and experience in order to maximize their academic credits upon enrolling with Henley-Putnam. Allowable credit is provided through challenge testing, ACE credit recommendations, experiential learning and transfer credit.
