Dealers and Hospitals will view prototype in March

The search for a safe and efficient method to lift Bariatric Patients from bed to a standing position may be over. VitalGo, Inc., is following up its introduction of the Total Lift Bed last year with a Bariatric version, which can bring a 1,000 pound patient to a standing position without any lifting by staff. Hospitals, nursing homes and dealers from throughout the country will attend a preview of this new hospital bed in New York at the LaGuardia Marriott. The viewing is by invitation only and will be held March 8-11.

In late 2008, VitalGo, Inc. introduced the Total Lift Bed to the healthcare market. This product represents a technological innovation in hospital beds. The Total Lift Bed safely elevates a patient from a lying position to a complete standing position. The Total Lift Bed is certified to safely lift a 300 pound patient to a standing position and then return the patient to bed.

Healthcare facilities have employed the product in a variety of ways to treat patients who had difficulty in standing or transitioning to a standing position. The Total Lift Bed has also been used to elevate debilitated patients to a vertical position to assist in wound care and pulmonary drainage.

However, dealers and healthcare facilities have continually requested a product that lifts heavier or Bariatric patients. “It was remarkable that everywhere we went and everyone we spoke to liked the function of the Total Lift Bed but they placed great emphasis on obtaining a Hospital Bed that could lift much heavier patients,” said company CEO Ohad Paz.

As the patient population has grown heavier and older there has been a sharp increase in both staff and patient injuries in healthcare. OSHA has listed nursing as one of the top ten most dangerous professions. In January of 2008, Medicare instituted new policies designed to reduce patient and staff injuries due to trips and falls. Hospitals have noted a sharp increase in Worker’s Compensation claims for back injuries.

Nationwide, most healthcare facilities are instituting “minimal lift policies” to reduce the amount of lifting staff performs. Many states have already passed legislation requiring healthcare facilities to institute these policies. VitalGo’s innovative technology should be a valuable part of any healthcare facility’s program to safely get Bariatric patients in and out of bed.
