This thought-provoking book relates the lives of two army lieutenants who served in World War II.

The Briar Patch, a new book by Carl E. Osterhout, has been released by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc. This book relates to the lives of two Army lieutenants, who served in World War II, one in the Pacific and the other in Europe, where they were each wounded in battle.

It describes how their lives were affected by events prior to their Army experience, during the war, and after their release from active duty in Texas, where they found themselves facing a return to civilian life. These events are chronicled in the complexities of everyday experiences, both individually and eventually together in a relationship that had evolved into more than a friendship.

It is a bittersweet story, mixed with adventure and romance. In no manner is the story unique to these two men alone. It represents wartime experiences that have been common to many soldiers for centuries, compounded by the realization that one day they might be alive and the next day have their remains shipped back home in a wooden box.

The relationship between these two men in World War II exists today in the 21st Century. It will exist in the future, whenever two individuals find themselves questioning their lives, and their place in their private world, as they seek love and happiness.

Author Carl E. Osterhout was born in a small oil boomtown in Oklahoma in 1919. His childhood was one of happiness in a small community of family and friends, despite the approaching Great Depression of 1929, which eventually turned his home state, and the entire nation, into a storm of economic hardship.

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the life he had known changed completely. Soon after his high school graduation, he was inducted into military training for one year with the National Guard and then into the U.S. Army, where he achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Upon his release from service, he married an Army nurse who had cared for him during his eight months of hospitalization back in the mainland from North Africa where he became ill. This marriage produced three sons, who were successfully raised to maturity.

He is a licensed funeral director and embalmer, and has operated his own funeral home. He presently resides in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Briar Patch is the first book he has written which he feels worthy of publication.

The Briar Patch is a 144-page paperback with a retail price of $15.00. The ISBN is 978-1-4349-9577-3. It was published by RoseDog Books of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
