Houston, TX (PRWEB) March 1, 2010
In an effort to help Houston homeowners feel confident about home remodeling projects (and the contractors they choose), Houston Structural has partnered with other local home remodeling businesses to offer two free community seminars. The seminars will cover general information regarding home remodeling projects – how to select a contractor, what to expect during a project, and how homeowners can help facilitate a home remodeling project. The hope is to give homeowners the tools they need to make sure their remodeling projects are done right, on time, and on budget.
“Remodeling can be a stressful time for a homeowner. People don’t realize that their house literally becomes a construction zone. But we have plenty of tips to help homeowners gets through the process,” says Pat Briggs, corporate secretary at Houston Structural.
The seminars will be held in March and will be broken up into two parts: The first part will consist of presentations from several Houston-area contractors. The second part will be a Q&A session where homeowners can ask questions and get one-on-one remodeling advice. Tom Lammers, president and CEO at Houston Structural, will be giving a presentation on how to get your remodeling project started and what to expect. The first step, of course, is finding a good contractor.
When it comes to choosing a contractor for your next home improvement project, there are a few red flags to look out for, says Briggs. According to Briggs, you can tell a lot from your first meeting: “Does he have a professional appearance – or does he come into your house smelling like cigarettes in dirty clothes?” Briggs says. “Is his truck in good working order? Does leave you with any brochures, references, or information about his company? Does he appear knowledgeable about the work? If not, then you probably want to go with another contractor.” Homeowners should pay attention to their instincts. “Remember, your contractor will be working in your home, so you need to be comfortable with them,” says Briggs.
“You should also check your contractor’s credentials: Does he have certifications from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), or the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI)? Is he a member of the Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA) or the Houston Chapter of NARI? Ask contractors about their experience and if they regularly work in your area. Ask for references, and then, check their references,” says Briggs.
In addition to Tom Lammers from Houston Structural, representatives from the seminars’ co-sponsors will also be giving presentations. Speakers include Dan Bawden, of Legal Eagle Contractors; Mike Wilburn, of Custom Builders & Remodelers; Cheryl Carpenter, of Poggenpohl; Mary Calvin, of Cabinet Innovations; and representatives from Miele appliances and OKITE countertops.
The first seminar will take place on Thursday, March 11th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at at Poggenpohl Kitchen Design Studio, 5002 Westheimer Road. A second seminar is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 27th, at Cabinet Innovations, 5120 Woodway, Suite 219. In addition to presentations and Q&A sessions, food and refreshments will be supplied for all attendees. Seating is limited, so please RSVP to email@example.com.
