ETAP® Smart Grid Solution for BELCO to Include Predictive Simulation and Load Forecasting

Operation Technology, Inc. (OTI), developer of the ETAP enterprise solution for electrical power systems, announced today the kick-off of its latest Real-Time project for Bermuda Electric Light Company Limted (BELCO). BELCO is Bermuda's sole supplier of electricity, operating a generating plant and transmission and distribution systems throughout the Island.

BELCO’s generating plant has a maximum capacity of 168 megawatts, consisting of 14 diesel engines and 9 gas turbines. Individual engine capacity ranges between 2.5 and 14.5 megawatts, and generates approximately 728 million Kilowatt-Hours. The system consists of 34 substations, 135 miles of underground transmission cables, 120 miles of high voltage underground distribution cables, 545 miles of high voltage overhead distribution lines and 370 miles of low voltage overhead service lines.

“BELCO selected the ETAP Real-Time Solution as the core component of its new Internal Power Monitoring & Control System. The Internal Power Monitoring and Control (IPMC) system will augment energy management and measurement within BELCO. It provides functionality to dynamically predict the conditions of non-metered locations, said Mr. Denton E. Williams, Manager of Plant Operations at Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited.” Mr. Denton further adds, “. . . the IPMC allows for various modes of generator control from assisted to fully automatic control of the generation system, based on the input parameters of demand, efficiency, safety and incoming power purchases. The IPMC can also be used for switching logic verification, and electrical event playback. The event playback allows critical data to be automatically replayed including protection operation (both simulated based on data and actual) and fault analysis and system protection coordination validation. BELCO expects to use the completed IPMC to predict directionality of disturbances and augment power-quality monitoring.”

ETAP Smart Grid Solutions offer a comprehensive range of strategies and applications to enable electrical utilities to plan, coordinate and safely operate their grid. ETAP Smart Grid encompasses state-of-the-art Distribution Management System built upon proven ETAP Real-Time technologies. It provides the necessary mission critical applications for power distribution networks from industrial to large scale T&D networks. “ETAP Smart Grid Solution enables BELCO’s operators, engineers and managers to proactively manage, control, visualize, predict, optimize, summarize, and automate their power distribution network resulting in informed real-time decision making process,” says Sam Mian, Director of Business Development at ETAP.
