After any holiday, thousands of well-intentioned gifts get returned to the store. Though it might be the thought that counts, even an expensive leather jacket fizzles when it's three sizes too small. Buying the perfect gift is always a challenge, especially when it comes to clothing and accessories. The number of choices involved, including sizes, styles, and colors, can be intimidating for any gift-giver.
A new company, GGRS Concepts, takes the intimidation and guesswork out of gift-giving. Executive Director Alissa O'Bryan, a veteran of the retail clothing and intimate apparel industry, found that many consumers lack confidence and information when shopping for personal gifts. This inspired her to create gift-giving companions Guy's Guide to the Right Size and Gal's Guide to the Right Size.
"Men would come into the store and try to guess their wife's or girlfriend's size by comparing her to a mannequin or sales associate," O'Bryan said. "It was really hard to assist these guys. Their descriptions weren't very helpful, and they usually guessed wrong on either the size or style."
Each pocket guide contains 24 pages of information. Customers fill out the guide by writing down measurements and sizes, marking styles they prefer, and making note of favorite stores, restaurants, fragrances, and so on. Completed guides can then be exchanged among couples, friends, or family members. O'Bryan wanted the guides to be comprehensive so that shoppers would have a large variety of ideas at their fingertips.
"When it comes to buying gifts for your special someone, it shouldn't be a guessing game. I designed our products so that buying a great gift can be as simple as choosing a store and showing a sales associate the customized guide," O'Bryan said.
Kevin Hearne, a recent GGRS Concepts customer, said he was excited about the possibilities.
"I used to walk by a store, see a mannequin modeling something I thought would look nice on my wife, and squashed the impulse to buy it for her because I was too embarrassed to take a guess at the right size," Hearne said. "Now I know I can buy her things I'm reasonably sure she'll like and that will fit her. It's a great feeling."
In addition to selling gift-giving guides, the GGRS Concepts website provides information on taking proper measurements to make sure you are buying clothes that will fit you best. This is especially useful when shopping online since a person can't try on clothes before buying them.
