Good things come in small packages, including the ReeVue™ lightweight, portable indirect calorimeter, an essential tool for accurately calculating the daily calorie expenditure of individuals struggling with weight loss issues-- now available through Primary Care Diagnostics, LLC.

According to the American Obesity Association, approximately 127 million adults in the U.S. are overweight, 60 million obese, and 9 million severely obese. Currently, 64.5 percent of U.S. adults aged 20 years and older are overweight and 30.5 percent are obese. Severe obesity prevalence is now 4.7 percent, up from 2.9 percent reported in the 1988-1994 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

At a time when obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States, even within the juvenile population, physicians report that the demand for medically-based customized weight loss programs is greater than ever before. A baseline metabolic measurement is essential for the development of such a program; periodic comparison measurements enable prompt adjustment of the treatment or program, based on metabolic changes—assisting in nutritional assessment and medical nutrition therapy.
ReeVue provides just such a measurement quickly and conveniently—delivering hospital-quality readouts in just ten minutes within a physician’s office or clinic, at a fraction of the cost of complex and cumbersome traditional systems.

ReeVue tests are covered by Medicare and most commercial insurance companies at an average national Medicare reimbursement of $73.23, and the test can be performed once per quarter to track the patient’s REE (Resting Energy Expenditure)—the number of calories the patient burns at rest in the course of one day.

No special training is required to operate the system. A seated or reclining patient simply breathes into the mask or mouthpiece for ten minutes, allowing the ReeVue unit to measure the patient’s oxygen consumption. When the test is complete, the unit displays the results on-screen and may also deliver documentation in the form of a printed report that details the resting metabolic rate in comparison with other subjects of the same height, weight, age and gender. The easy-to-use system automatically recalibrates itself following each use.

A simplified and compact version of the indirect calorimeters used in hospitals and research facilities, the ReeVue has been validated against the standard metabolic cart and demonstrated equivalent accuracy in measuring both oxygen consumption and resting energy expenditure. Clinical studies have also shown the table-top ReeVue System to be significantly more accurate than hand-held devices.
