Adventure Fit today announced that the New Belgium Urban Assault Ride, the largest bicycle-based urban adventure race series in the country, will kick off the 2010 series in Tucson, Arizona on April 18.

At this pedal-powered urban adventure, teams of two bicycle to checkpoints around town where they must complete a funky obstacle course or task before continuing. Obstacles change from year-to-year and city-to-city, so cyclists never know what to expect, but the cycling/obstacle mix is sure to challenge and amuse cyclists of all ages and abilities.

The Urban Assault Ride is a sustainably minded event with a mission. It was created to show cyclists that it is safe, fast and efficient to spin through town on two wheels. Because participants are required to choose their own route between each checkpoint, they gain a better understanding of their city's bike infrastructure and can experience, first hand, the viability of using a bike for in-town transportation.

According to Josh Kravetz, event founder, "With New Belgium as our title sponsor, we have been able to create an event that shows people a way to engage in sustainable fun. This event gives us the chance to promote cycling for transportation and to show people some opportunities for two-wheeled living in their community."
In order to minimize the event's footprint, all venues are solar-powered, a truck fueled by bio-diesel delivers gear to the races, and nearly all waste is compostable or recyclable. In 2009, trash marshals diverted an average of 90 percent of event-related waste from landfills. In addition, participants in all markets are asked to pledge to ride their bike for transportation through New Belgium Brewing Company's Team Wonderbike.

"In our 8th season, we're so excited to bring our celebration of bikes and beer to 13 cities. We're really thankful for all of the big wheel-loving folks that have made the New Belgium Brewing Urban Assault Ride one of the country's biggest bike rides," continues event founder Josh Kravetz. "Rest assured, we'll be bringing it this year! Participants will enjoy new obstacles, more beer, and lots of financial support for cycling non-profits all over the country."
