The Foundation for Asia Pacific Education today announces it has received a $10,000 donation from STA Travel Inc., a global travel specialist with 30 years of experience helping students, teachers and young professionals travel the world.

The donation is the second from STA Travel given to the foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization raising funds to assist students in gaining cultural and academic experiences in the Asia Pacific region.

“This new $10,000 donation from STA Travel is a strong show of support for our ongoing work making study abroad in the Asia Pacific a reality for more students regardless of their backgrounds,” said Foundation Chair Christie Doherty. “With these additional STA Travel scholarships, we can open more doors for students to gain international experience in this important region of the world.”

Last year’s $10,000 STA Travel donation to the foundation supported five students who studied in Japan, Korea, Australia and Mongolia.

“Our mission is to create opportunities for students and young adults to experience the world in any way they choose,” said Kevin Jacobs, STA Travel's managing director. “This donation helps us achieve that mission and give deserving students the opportunity to study abroad where they can learn just as much about themselves as they do about the world around them.”

Brendan Morrell, a University of Pittsburgh student, in 2009 received an STA Travel scholarship from the foundation. It enabled him to live and travel last summer in and around Mongolia.

“This trip was not only incredibly enjoyable and educational in terms of cultural awareness but also very beneficial to my academic life and career path,” he said in an essay. “I doubt I would have been able to participate in it if not for the generous scholarship I received.”

STA Travel’s donation directly supports the Foundation for Asia Pacific Education’s mission, which is to help young adults in North America become global citizens and leaders who understand Asia Pacific’s role as the hub of an increasingly interconnected world. The Foundation’s strategic partner is GlobaLinks Learning Abroad, which offers the educational programs AustraLearn, AsiaLearn and EuroLearn and also provides vision and financial support to the foundation so it can seek contributions from individuals and organizations that believe in the power of study abroad.

STA Travel scholarships are designated for students majoring in Photography, Film and Art, Travel and Tourism, International Business, International Studies and Foreign Language.
