“At SFF/MAPCS, our programs are creating lasting change in the lives of our students, helping to break a cycle of poverty created by broken social and educational systems,“ said Lucretia Murphy, executive director of the See Forever Foundation.
Washington, DC (PRWEB) March 10, 2010
Patti Austin, Grammy award-winning jazz vocalist and Renee Poussaint, Emmy award-winning journalist, will join Jack Davies, DC-based philanthropist and AOL International Founder, and Julianne Malveaux, president of Bennett College for Women and noted economist, author and commentator, as they honor students, staff and partners of the Maya Angelou Schools in Washington, D.C.
The event entitled, “Celebrate the Maya Way” is expected to bring together celebrity guests, alongside the talents of aspiring students in support of the important academic programs and wraparound services offered at the Maya Angelou Public Charter School System (MAPCS).
The See Forever Foundation (SFF) is the nonprofit organization that raises funds to support the transformative educational program and socio-mental wraparound services students receive at the Maya Angelou Schools. Founded in 1997 by David Domenici and James Forman, Jr., as a multi-faceted, comprehensive educational program for Washington DC-based, at-risk teens, the See Forever Foundation now supports hundreds of high school and middle school students as they pursue successful academic paths at the Maya Angelou Schools in the District of Columbia. The schools include: three successful charter school campuses, the school for adjudicated youth at New Beginnings Youth Development Center, and a Transition Center that provides academic and workforce development to youth and young adults under the supervision of the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services.
“At SFF/MAPCS, our programs are creating lasting change in the lives of our students, and more broadly, helping to break a cycle of poverty created by broken social and educational systems,“ said Lucretia Murphy, J.D., Ph.D., executive director of the foundation and schools. In describing the school’s outcomes she said, “Students who have been incarcerated enroll in our charter schools; MAPCS middle school students enroll at our high school campuses; and our high school graduates enroll in colleges and universities across the country. We are changing lives, one student, one day, and one success story at a time – this is the Maya Way.”
