With winter weeks on the decline and spring right around the corner, many families are gearing up for the start of warm-weather activities to beat back cabin fever. But not everyone has the same opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors when stuck within the confines of the Big Apple. Kids especially who lack recreational activities that truly hold their interest are often at risk for trouble and poor decision-making but a local non-profit agency, centered on the great Hudson River, aims to change all that with their unique Summer Sailing Academy.
The summer camp-style program integrates sailing skills, math and science lessons, and personal development life skills during each one week session for campers aged 11-18. Camp hours run from 8:30 to 4:00 pm (Fridays until 12:00pm). The exciting week-long sailing program offers discounts for additional family members and for multiple-session participation. The camp staff focuses not only on safety, they also prioritize the enrichment of each child’s life and creating memories for kids that will inevitably last a lifetime. With a child’s propensity for high-energy and infinite curiosity, sailing has been realized as a perfect outlet for both fun and learning. The additional preparation and thrill of racing in the weekly regatta is an experience few in the nation have felt but typically becomes a high point in a young child's life.
The city’s youth, especially those with single and working parents, often fall victim to the criminal element of life during the long summer months due to lack of supervision. The Summer Sailing Academy is an excellent resource to steer kids to the better path, allowing them to see a bit more of the world than they may normally experience.
Hudson River Community Sailing is a strong supporter in improving the lives and skills of the city’s youth. In addition to the popular summer sailing program, the non-profit organization is also on a mission to help foster better choices during the school year. The organization offers Accredited After-School Programs that intertwines sailing lessons with academic subjects. The program also encourages better leadership skills, teamwork, and the development of sailing skills.
Hudson River Community Sailing is a non-profit organization and offers the entire community opportunities to participate in water activities such as sailing and competitive regattas. Their adult membership programs are like no other in the area. The organization was founded to serve the city with fun activities and educational resources but takes a serious participatory role at improving the lives and confidence of the city’s youth. The group is comprised of experienced mariners, teachers, and business people who have a love of water and a dedication to better the lives of kids and the community as a whole.
Hudson River Community Sailing is located on the shore of the Hudson River in Hudson River Park at 26th Street. Interested parties can visit the organization’s website http://www.hudsonsailing.org and contact the non-profit at (212) 924-1920 or via email at info(at)hudsonsailing(dot)org.
