Plastic that lasts forever is a huge problem. We wanted to do our part by designing a trash bag that would biodegrade in an active landfill.
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) March 11, 2010
The trash bag industry, along with the green manufacturer community, reached an important “first” recently: the announcement of the very first product and only trash bag to be validated as biodegradable under landfill conditions by UL Environment, a trusted provider of independent green claims validation. In January, UL Environment announced that Green Genius biodegradable plastic trash bags can now carry their “Environmental Claims Validated” seal based on their independent verification of the company’s ASTM D5511 testing.
ASTM D5511 is the leading recognized standard for proving biodegradation of plastic materials under anaerobic landfill conditions. Green Genius biodegradable trash bags are also certified biodegradable by an independent, EPA-registered lab using the ASTM D5511 method. The UL Environment validation represents yet another third-party confirmation of biodegradability.
While there are a variety of “compostable” disposal bags on the market, those products have only been shown to biodegrade in a commercial composting facility. Since less than 5 percent of all U.S. households have access to such facilities and most trash cannot be composted, these compostable bags don’t satisfy the needs of most consumers who are looking for a trash bag that won’t last forever.
That’s where Green Genius comes in. Green Genius biodegradable trash bags are designed to biodegrade in an active landfill, where almost all trash bags end up.
“Plastic that lasts forever is a huge problem. We wanted to do our part by designing a trash bag that would biodegrade in an active landfill – something that’s never been done before. Depending on the landfill, our bags will biodegrade in one to ten years while our competitors’ bags will pretty much last forever,” said Sam Paul, Green Genius founder and CEO.
The secret behind Green Genius bags’ biodegradability is a proprietary organic ingredient made by Bio-Tec Environmental called EcoPure, which bonds nutrients to the plastic’s molecular structure. This process makes the polymers edible by microbes, allowing the plastic to naturally biodegrade.
