San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) March 11, 2010
Wine.com, the leading online wine retailer, and Wines of Chile, a trade organization dedicated to the promotion of Chilean wines, have partnered with Chilean wine importers and their U.S. wholesalers to raise funds for the citizens of Chile who have been affected by the recent earthquake.
For every 12 bottles of select Chilean wine purchased at Wine.com through March 31st, $100 will be donated to Hogar de Cristo and Un Techo para Chile. Hogar de Cristo is a non-profit organization dedicated to effecting substantive change with respect to Chile’s social conditions. The organization takes in, and strives to rehabilitate, the poorest in Chile, by giving them links to a community and a stronger opportunity to build a better life. Hogar de Cristo is an efficient and transparent organization driven by the ideals of Saint Alberto Hurtado to promote a culture of respect, justice, and solidarity. They rely on small monthly contributions from many members, which will be difficult to secure in the future as these Chilean donors have also suffered losses. Un Techo para Chile builds homes for those in need throughout Chile, and housing is one of the biggest needs after the earthquake. Wine.com’s goal is to donate $100,000 to Hogar de Cristo and Un Techo para Chile by April 1st. More information can be found at http://www.hogardecristo.cl or http://www.untechoparachile.cl.
“It’s devastating what has happened in Chile. Everyone is looking for ways to make a contribution to help rebuild the country,” said Michael Osborn, Founder and Vice President of Merchandising at Wine.com. “Our customers are already big supporters of Chilean wine. By buying the wines they already love to drink, they will become an integral part of our effort to send much-needed aid to those suffering from the recent earthquake.”
While the damages to the wine industry in Chile are lower than first feared, the losses for the residents of Chile are high. The Chilean government estimates that over 500,000 homes have been destroyed with many citizens lacking basic needs such as food, drinking water and shelter.
“We are incredibly grateful to have Wine.com’s support at this crucial time,” says Lori Tieszen, Executive Director of Wines of Chile USA. “This investment will absolutely help to expedite rebuilding of communities affected by the recent events.”
Wine.com has created a special section on its website that features a list of eligible wines, all priced under $25, to make it easy for customers to find the Chilean wines they enjoy. Each bottle purchased – no minimum quantity required – is eligible for the donation. Whether they buy one bottle or 20 bottles, for every 12 bottles sold, $100 dollars will be donated to Hogar de Cristo and Un Techo para Chile. A complete list of participating Chilean wines can be found at: http://www.wine.com/chile.
