Sammy Snail and His Cousin, Sedgwick Slug, a new children's book by Marsha Barrett, has been released by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc.
Sammy Snail and Sedgwick Slug are enjoying a feast in the compost pile when a huge rainstorm blows in. The wet weather is dangerous to both cousins, so what to do? This is not a problem for Sammy, who can just retreat into his shell, but for Sedgwick, getting too wet can be deadly! He does not have time to take his usual precautions, as the storm is growing worse by the minute. Sammy has an idea that could save Sedgwick from the storm, but can they work together to build a shelter of safety in time?
Sammy Snail and His Cousin, Sedgwick Slug is an exciting tale of adventure that teaches children about the lives of these related creatures. After first introducing the characters and discussing how they survive in different seasons and in different types of weather, author Marsha Barrett shed new light on these little-known yet fascinating animals. This story is educationally sound and scientifically accurate, regarding most of the life of the snail and the slug, and children will enjoy getting to know a bit better these creatures who live in their backyards. In Sammy Snail and His Cousin, Sedgwick Slug, Marsha Barrett has crafted a suspenseful, exciting book you'll encourage your children to read again and again.
First and foremost, Marsha Barrett wanted to write a book about an animal that kids misunderstand and decided the much-maligned slug was perfect. The slug is always thought of in a negative light whereas the snail has a different image. It is her hope this book will educate kids on the two cousins.
Mrs. Barrett holds a bachelor of arts degree in speech pathology and audiology from Kansas State University and a masters in special education from the University of Kansas, as well as certification in education policy and administration. She spent thirty-three years in education, including eight years at the Kansas State School for the Deaf, twenty years as a public school administrator, and five years as a high school principal. She has been a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, Kansas State High School Activities Association, Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, and Phi Delta Kappa, among others.
When not working with children, Mrs. Barrett finds time for golf, needlepoint, travel, and gardening. Married for almost forty years to husband Mark C. Barrett, they share two children, Wendy England and Rustin Barrett. Sammy Snail and His Cousin, Sedgwick Slug is her first published children's book.
