CY2009-2010 Crystal & Oscillator

Consulting Services & Associates (CS&A) has released its latest reports on the Semiconductor Timing Markets covering CY2009-2010 Crystal and Oscillators, and Semiconductor Clock and Timing.

CS &A LLC provides a unique methodology in reporting – we call it Top Down/Bottoms up, where we focus on specific semiconductor timing product consumption by application & by market segment – all with weighted $ASP’s to roll up the TAM and Forecasts… Detail on Timing consumption and market trends for the Consumer, Communications, Computing (Motherboard and non Motherboard), Industrial, Automotive, Gaming, Medical and more, are provided.

The Crystal and oscillator market declined by 14.4%% in 2009, but is expected to recover by 7.5% in 2010, and Semiconductor Clock & Timing, which showed lower revenues by some 8% Year on Year, is poised for a record revenue year.

Mark Sherwood, Principal Associate at CS &A LLC said; “Total Crystal and oscillator revenue declined 14.4% in 2009 to $2.8 billion. Crystal and oscillator revenue had peaked at $3.6 billion in 2007, and now is not forecasted to reach that level again until 2013. Unit volumes decreased in all product categories in 2009, with ASPs declining as much as 7%. The market will bounce back this year, growing 7.5% to $3.1 billion.”

With the decline in the overall market, most Crystal/Osc supplier’s declined with it. TXC managed to show a gain of 8.8% SOM (Share Of Market) over 2008, growing its share of the overall market to 8.3%, edging that much closer to the top 4 Japanese suppliers. Epson Toyocom managed to grow its share of the overall market from 19.9% to 22.2%. KDS also grew its share, taking over the spot from KDS.

Discera and SiTime continue shipping their SiMEMS resonator based products, MEMS Oscillators (MOs). SiTime has struck a deal with Maxim in which Maxim is reselling SiTime’s oscillators. Silicon Clocks is still pushing forward with its development and is rumored to have an RTC based solution utilizing their proprietary CMEMS Technology. Another SiMEMS resonator startup, Sand9, claims to have finally developed a competitive TCXO replacement. All four of these SiMEMS resonator startups received more funding in 2009.

It is not only on the SiMEMS resonator startups that are trying to displace quartz Crystals and oscillators; the all-silicon clock oscillator companies are continuing to make headway. Mobius Microsystems was acquired by IDT, and IDT is claiming that it will make big inroads with the technology. SiLabs continues to sell its all-silicon clock oscillator and it appears they are winning design sockets. A new company emerged in 2009, eoSemi, with claims that it has developed compensated RC technology which is initially focused on kHz clocks. Silego too, is pushing into 32KHz, and Multigig takes on a private label deal with Micrel - a busy year all in all…

In Semiconductor Clock & Timing, Merger and Acquisition activities included ON Semi and IDT making efforts to increase the portfolios and technologies – 2009 showed growth in the second half of the year in Communications, Computing, Industrial and Consumer creating an optimistic view for 2010. IDT remains king of the hill in revenues going into 2010… and for this year, we added a new product category to Semiconductor Clock & Timing for 2010: Real Time Clocks (RTC’S), which have become a hot bed of activity and we included a very detailed section on the market, technologies, suppliers, and products in play, and in planning today…

Semiconductor Timing is moving toward a record $$revenue year with the inclusion of the Real Time Clock Category, which impacted the TAM in a big way…

CS&A’s findings are available in its “CY2009-2010 Crystal & Oscillator” report and the CY2009-2010 Semiconductor Clock & Timing report. The reports provide a detailed and unique look at the crystal and oscillator market providing forecasts for all major product categories, in addition to supplier market shares. Combining our unique top down/bottoms up methodology, market trends, actual’s; by product category, product segment, and technology, supplier base detail, TAM, Forecast and technologies employed, creates what we call the “Timing MarketScape,” providing a unique and full spectrum view of this dynamic market.

Reports are available in Single User and Enterprise licenses. A combined version including; Semiconductor Clock and timing, and Crystal / Oscillators is also available. Enterprise licensees also get updates at Q3 and Q4 during the calendar year and 2 hours of report related consult. In addition, Supplier dossiers, which complement with the reports, can be purchased separately.
