Blue Onboard and Velvet Officially Launch Innovative New On-Bus Marketing Solution

Following a successful 9 month trial with Velvet, Blue Onboard’s innovative new on-bus mobile marketing and advertising solution was officially launched in front of a selected audience in Eastleigh, Hampshire – home of both companies. The Blue Onboard solution, installed on the entire fleet of Velvet buses, allows highly targeted, effective and measurable advertising and marketing campaigns to be sent to passengers’ mobile phones whilst they are travelling.

Blue Onboard has developed a Bluetooth® and Wi-Fi™ based marketing solution specifically for targeting bus passengers, allowing highly effective campaigns to be run whilst passengers are on the bus in a state of dwell time and experiencing “micro-boredom”. Velvet, a bus company operating services in and around the Eastleigh area of Hampshire has been their trial partner since June 2009.

The Blue Onboard system allows marketing campaigns to be targeted by time of day, bus route and destination, location and even external factors such as the weather, and has attracted local and national advertisers and brands, as well local authorities who want to get their message out.

Phil Stockley, managing director of Velvet explains, “Blue Onboard has continuously come up with new and creative ideas. It’s a great way to get in touch with our passengers and the trials have shown that they like it. Advertising generally represents a very small part of a bus company’s revenue, and we don’t allow external advertising as it would obscure our strong branding. However, by utilising this kind of technology we can create a significantly greater revenue stream than with traditional bus advertising, and without having an impact on how our buses look.”

Matthew Poole, founder of Blue Onboard added, “Velvet’s passenger demographics are perfect for this kind of technology. They run main commuter routes and several college routes, and carry shoppers to and from the town centre. Unlike run-of-the-mill proximity marketing where you are simply blasting out ads from a static location, we are able to broadcast compelling campaigns based on the typical passenger demographic at that time and the route the bus is on. The average bus ride is at least 20-30 minutes, and passengers naturally reach for and play with their mobile phones during the journey.”

The launch event attracted local business leaders including representatives from regional Chambers of Commerce and transport groups to see Poole and Stockley present and demonstrate the effectiveness of the solution – not only for commercial advertising, but as a localised distribution point for useful information, including audio podcasts and videos.

Since it was first installed, the solution has been continuously developed and now has the ability to provide on-board Wi-Fi™ Internet access (free or ad-sponsored), and an on-board Web site accessible at high-speed to obtain local information, maps, content or live travel feeds. The system has also been recently installed on the new Enderby premium park and ride service in Leicester on behalf of Leicestershire County Council (
