Masterpiece Living, a successful aging initiative, recently awarded Dr. Harry R. (Rick) Moody, Ph.D., director of academic affairs for AARP, its Robert L. Kahn award for his outstanding achievements at AARP and throughout his career. The award, established in 2008, recognizes contributions to the propagation and application of principles of successful aging and is presented at the annual Lyceum Conference.
“It’s a great pleasure and an honor to recognize Rick with this award,” said Robert L. Kahn, Masterpiece Living advisory board member and inaugural award winner. “His inspirational work in aging motivates all of us and particularly me as I turn 92 this year. Rick makes me thoughtful about my own life: the meaning of life, the activities, the actions and best of all the relationships.”
At AARP, Moody has led the Office of Academic Affairs in sponsoring a series of national conferences on positive aging. Additionally, under his leadership the office created a nationally-disseminated course, ''Making Age an Asset,'' which is available in more than 1,600 community colleges across the country.
“I am truly honored to receive this award, named for someone who ‘walks the talk’ about successful aging in his own life,'' Moody said. ''Dr. Kahn’s gift to us is a challenge: to create conditions for us all to walk in his footsteps."
Recipients of the Kahn award are leaders in shaping societal views of aging, identifying and tapping the unique human potential of older adults and contributing to the cultural transformation of the older adult industry. Kahn award recipients demonstrate a personal devotion to aging successfully and a professional commitment to leading a movement of change in the United States, which ultimately results in an increased quality of life for every older adult. A life-long passion for working with older adults and the unique ability to lead the charge to change aging in our country are key attributes of a Robert L. Kahn award recipient.
Before joining AARP, Moody served as Executive Director of the Brookdale Center on Aging at Hunter College and Chairman of the Board of Elderhostel. He is the author of many articles and several books on the humanities and aging, including Aging: Concepts & Controversies (now in its 6th edition); Ethics in an Aging Society; and The Five Stages of the Soul: Charting the Spiritual Passages That Shape Our Lives, which was translated into seven languages worldwide. Moody also edits a monthly e-newsletter, ''Human Values in Aging,'' which explores the role of growth and creativity in later life.
Kahn was the first recipient of the namesake award at the first annual Masterpiece Living Lyceum in February 2008. He was a professor emeritus of psychology and public health at the University of Michigan, where he was also research scientist emeritus at the Institute for Social Research, which he founded. He was a member of the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Successful Aging and co-author of the book, Successful Aging, Random House ©1998; reprinted with permission by the Masterpiece Alliance Foundation ©2008. Dr. Kahn, who resides in Ann Arbor, Michigan, was born in 1918 and continues to be active at the University of Michigan, the Institute for Social Research and in the continuing development of the Masterpiece Living initiative. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine (National Academy of Science) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Masterpiece Alliance Foundation Board member.
