LocaModa Updates Its Place Based Social Media Platform

New release offers contextual moderation and even faster streaming. Original white paper entitled "Twitter on Place Based Screens: Why It's Not So Simple" published.

LocaModa, Inc. today released an updated version of their place based social media platform.

The upgraded platform focuses on speed, scalability and security:

  • Streamlined integration with updated Streaming and Search APIs enhance real-time message flow for text messages and social media feeds (e.g. Twitter, Flickr, and Foursquare).
  • Contextual content rating and moderation allow for campaigns to curate content on a more granular level (i.e. by venue, city, DMA or network).
  • Sophisticated traffic management system using embedded Active MQ enhances performance and boosts scalability.

In tandem with this platform release, LocaModa has published a white paper by Senior LocaModa Systems Architect Jacob Elder, outlining the unique technical hurdles of real-time interactivity on place based digital signage networks, highlighting many of the new features of LocaModa’s improved platform architecture. While event-based and individual digital signage locations prove to be fairly straightforward deployments, this paper points up the notable challenges that the network effect poses to the real-time distribution of streaming content.

Elder writes:

"Displaying place-based social media brings with it a plethora of challenges, from technological hurdles of aggregation and delivery of arbitrary, on-demand social media data streams to compliance with public decency laws, the CAN-SPAM Act and public liability considerations – all while having to facilitate a holistic and engaging user experience to mostly transient, lean-back audiences.

The technical challenges range from the well-understood battles against internet spammers and pranksters to technological hurdles of delivering information in a timely, coherent and relevant fashion. The biggest challenge of all, however, is the unenviable task of having to moderate large amounts of information in real time; moreover, that information often must be filtered through ad hoc communities, topics of interest or venue and contextual guidelines in order to make it suitable and desirable for public display."
