St Francis Xavier Sixth Form College In London, England Has Completed Deployment of An Extricom 802.11n Wireless LAN (WLAN) System to Provide Site-Wide Network Connectivity. The Implementation, Carried Out by Nortech Network Services, Will Embed Technology in Everyday Teaching and Ensure Access to the College’s Virtual Learning Environment.

We’re looking to embed the use of technology within everyday teaching to turn out technology-literate graduates. With the Extricom WLAN we can distribute wireless devices around the school and allow students to work wherever they are.

St Francis Xavier College, a 1350-student Roman Catholic Sixth Form College in Clapham, London, England, has completed deployment of an Extricom 802.11n wireless LAN (WLAN) system to provide robust, site-wide network connectivity. The implementation was carried out by Nortech Network Services, a system integrator with extensive experience in providing wireless and networking solutions to the education market. The Extricom WLAN will ensure that mobile students and staff can access the College’s virtual learning environment, a central portal containing online educational resources.

Saint Francis Xavier is committed to student achievement and has held top ranking in the 2009 government league table for South and Central London Sixth Form Colleges for 11 years running. Providing ubiquitous wireless access to a Moodle-based virtual learning environment will make an important contribution to the College’s strategy for maintaining their high academic standing. Student and staff can now log in to the SFX Moodle website from anywhere on the campus and easily leverage resources such as web links, assignments, exam papers, or course modules.

“We’re looking to embed the use of technology within everyday teaching, with the objective of turning out graduates who are technologically aware and literate”, stated Pat Griffin, St Francis Xavier’s Director of Information Technology, “The College was already well-equipped in terms of the wired network, but student access was limited to heavily over-subscribed learning centres. With the Extricom WLAN we can distribute wireless devices around the school and allow students to work wherever they are. It’s steadily becoming a critical part of our core infrastructure, and users no longer ask for access, they just say ‘We’ll go wireless’.”

Extricom WLAN has a well-established reputation in primary/secondary education for its simplicity of deployment and ability to ensure capacity in user-dense environments such as schools. Extricom’s Channel Blanket™ architecture allows access points to be densely deployed, providing reliable, resilient network access and high performance for end-users. The Extricom Switch coordinates the APs and eliminates the co-channel interference that reduces the performance of conventional WLAN systems. In the classroom, this translates to every user being able to quickly log on and leverage needed resources at full performance.

“The bottom line when deploying WLAN in a school is making it as easy as possible”, stated Perminder Bhara, director of Nortech Network Services, “At the end of the day, a school IT department just wants something that works well, is going to be reliable, and can provide performance guarantees. Also, more and more schools want to deploy 802.11n, but they need a solution that will work with legacy clients without impacting system speeds. Extricom fits the bill perfectly.”

“The deployment at St Francis Xavier College exemplifies the value Extricom brings to our primary/secondary education customers,” states Edu Meytal, Extricom’s executive VP of global sales. “Typically, they are looking for enterprise-grade wireless performance from a solution that can be overlaid over an existing wired network without complexity or system congestion, and the ability to scale to meet increasing bandwidth and application demands from students and staff. The Extricom solution is a simple, highly cost-effective, and operationally flexible way to achieve this.”
