This August the streets of India will be invaded once again by the Rickshaw Challenge Mumbai Xpress Auto Rickshaw Run, now in its momentous fifth consecutive year. Originally created in 2006 by Aravind Bremanandam and Chennai Event Management Services (CEMS), the Mumbai Xpress started as an experiment in just how far you could push the usual adventure holiday. Since then it has exploded in popularity, becoming one of the flagship events in a new wave of notorious, flamboyant adventures centred around a keen humanitarian awareness.
The Mumbai Xpress will see teams of adventurers from around the world embark on an epic rally starting in Chennai and then stretching over 1900 kilometres (about 1180 miles) through India, taking in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra. This would be an incredible feat on by car or by motorbike – but that would be far too prosaic for the wild-eyed teams of the Mumbai Xpress. They will be using the locally ubiquitous auto-rickshaw, the noble three wheeled workhorse of the subcontinent. Also known as a ‘tuk-tuk’ this is the vehicle of choice for the discerning (and mad) adventurer, combing all the safety and power of a moped with the convenience and comfort of a very small windowless car. For 14 days these dauntless competitors will travel through cities, villages, open countryside, along glittering coastlines and through steaming jungles - competing not through speed but by a series of wacky challenges and through humanitarian endeavour.
The Mumbai Xpress is proudly partnered with Round Table India, a dedicated local charity organisation that has helped the Xpress teams deliver much needed aid to underprivileged schools in rural areas. To date the Rickshaw Challenge series has contributed just under $50,000 to this truly deserving cause.
To celebrate the anticipated hitting of this milestone financial figure, as well as the 5th year of the Xpress, Gaming Zion is giving away free two highly coveted entries to the 2010 Rickshaw Challenge, with airline tickets to and from India, accommodation, and use of a fully equipped Gaming Zion rickshaw.
