LEVEL Studios, an independent digital agency, today announced their participation in judging a California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) application development contest. As part of a new Computer Science course, the competition challenged students to develop a compelling application based on the Google Android platform.
Over the past 10 years, LEVEL has been a long-term contributor to the California educational system. The agency’s executives and thought leaders regularly lecture at Cal Poly, providing real-world digital marketing and advertising insight. Alumni that now work for LEVEL have maintained close connections with faculty. This involvement has culminated in the company’s privilege to influence programs and curriculum across Cal Poly’s Graphic Communication, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Marketing departments. It also provides a solid infrastructure to cultivate and recruit students for agency employment after graduation, shaping the next generation of world-class digital media professionals.
As a result, the Cal Poly Computer Science department selected LEVEL to evaluate contest entries based on the company’s 15 years of application development expertise and commitment to delivering better user experiences on connected devices. To build awareness around mobile application development, Cal Poly invited Tom Kotlarek, VP | Technology for LEVEL, to speak at the college and underscore how multichannel technology serves as the backbone for the majority of projects that LEVEL completes for their clients.
Thirty-three students developed 15 Android applications in teams of 2, 3 or 4. Each team had a series of milestones to attain, including a prototype, a pre-alpha release, an alpha release reviewed by their peers and a beta release published in the Android Market. Apps were judged based on usability, quality and use of Android features. LEVEL provided and awarded the top prize in the competition.
