Caravan holidays deliver tremendous economic value, not just for the holidaymaker but for the rural economy also. Touring is an exceptionally affordable way for a family to take a break.

The Caravan Club’s bookings for 2010 are looking exceptionally buoyant and a scorching summer is expected in terms of people going caravanning and having a great time. Easter is typically the time when caravanners unwrap their ‘vans and head off on their favourite caravan park holidays for a spot of rest and relaxation without the need to worry about rail or air travel strikes.
Caravan Club members spent over £400million in the rural tourism economy last year – a figure that looks set to increase this year. This is money that is spent on eating out, shopping, visiting local attractions and buying local produce – this amount does not include pitch fees.
Nick Lomas, The Caravan Club’s Director of Marketing, comments, “Caravan holidays deliver tremendous economic value, not just for the holidaymaker but for the rural economy also. Touring is an exceptionally affordable way for a family to take a break. Should the plan for the UK to switch to Daylight Saving Time come to fruition, it will mean even longer and lighter evenings for people to get out and enjoy their leisure hours.”
In 2009 The Club launched its ‘Discover Touring’ campaign, aimed at highlighting the benefits, joy and freedom of touring holidays. The campaign is set to continue in 2010 which is sure to entice even more people to try out caravanning. Since the campaign launch, nearly 30k sampler magazines have been requested and over 70k visitors clicked into the New to Caravanning section of the website.
The campaign in 2010 is endorsed by former Formula 1 driver Mark Blundell. Blundell comments, “Much as I enjoy the excitement and thrill of motorsport, I’ve discovered there’s no better way to explore than in a motorhome – total freedom to go where you want, when you want.”
If people wish to try before they buy, The Caravan Club can offer a list of over 125 motorhome hire companies and numerous caravan hire companies – everything from VW campers to luxury caravans and also Winnebegos.
Club membership is in its 14th successive year of membership growth and members are fully engaged with their Club in regard to their leisure time. Website hits, renewals, bookings and transactions are at record levels.
Caravanning looks set to be the future of holidaying, it already accounts for 19% of all paid-for holidays and is the largest percentage sector.
