Thornwood Self Storage Center, the eco-friendly, 48,000-square-foot facility, added to its energy-saving features with the installation of a rooftop solar energy system. The 82 kilowatt (kW) system, consisting of 405 Suntech panels, was installed by Mercury Solar Systems, one of the leading solar integrators on the East Coast.

“The solar energy system is part of our long-term initiative to uphold high standards as a ‘green’ facility,” said Dan Kasman, co-owner of Thornwood Self Storage. “We expect the solar system to offset 68,897 pounds of carbon emissions per year, which is equivalent to recycling more than 1.5 million soda cans. It also eliminates burning 8,295 gallons of gasoline and will save countless dollars toward the cost of energy.”

Thornwood Self Storage Center financed the solar project and offset nearly 70% of the cost with incentives through NYSERDA’s (New York State Energy Research and Development Authority) Solar Electric Incentive Program and a federal grant. Kasman and Gyory engaged the services of NYSERDA-certified engineers O’Dea, Lynch, Abbattista Consulting Engineers, PC, Hawthorne, NY, to facilitate the energy-efficient development of the building in accordance with NYSERDA guidelines.

Kasman and co-owner Michael Gyory are highly committed to the health and improvement of the environment and community. The three-story facility, which has 360 climate-controlled units that measure from 25 square-feet to more than 400 square-feet, offers recyclable and/or biodegradable packing materials and uses only environmentally-friendly cleaning products. An energy-saving, motion-sensor system controls lighting. Local vegetation has been planted around the facility to eliminate the need for an underground irrigation system.

“We commend Dan and Michael for taking on this important environmental initiative and encourage more businesses to make the investment as the financial incentives in New York are at an all-time high,” said Jared Haines, President, Mercury Solar Systems.

The facility also features on-site power backup and an aerodynamically-designed, dual alternative fuel truck. On-site staff provides hands-on, customer friendly service, which is another hallmark initiative of the owners.

During the conversion from its previous use as a health club, 95 percent of the building’s structure was reused, and construction debris was recycled and reclaimed in an effort to reduce the impact on landfills. Converting the building to a storage facility will also reduce traffic congestion and auto emissions by more than 80 percent.

Thornwood Self Storage is located at 950 Broadway, Thornwood, NY, and is easily accessible from the Saw Mill River and Sprain Brook parkways. The facility is open seven days a week: Monday through Friday, 9am-6pm; Saturday, 9am-5pm; and Sunday, 10am-2pm. Insurance is available, and all major credit cards are accepted.
