Valerie Robinson Baker has never lost her inner child. She's the Ontario-based author of the Welcome to Norman's World series of illustrated children's books. Robinson Baker has the unique ability to happily and charmingly connect with youngsters on their own level, which is why her first release, Camping Is Fun . . . Isn't It?, was so warmly received in Canadian youth-oriented publishing circles. Her second illustrated publication in the Norman series, When I Grow Up, has just been released.
When I Grow Up, written and illustrated by Robinson Baker, and with striking colouration and design by Chris Baker, is the perfect follow-up to Camping Is Fun. This time out, Norman finds himself wondering what his life might be like when he grows up – and his thoughts run from the possibilities of looking after cute animals in a pet store, to leading a parade, to working in a crayon factory, and to working as a clerk in a yummy candy store.
Norman also dreams about being a construction worker, a puppeteer, a fortune-teller and, yes, even to being a superhero who might one day save the world! In the end, though, what Norman really wants is the best job of all: to be a great Dad, to give him an outlet for all the "love and hugs stored up inside of me."
It's the simple straightforwardness of the storyline that makes When I Grow Up so appealing to children and their parents. The book is rich, delightful and entirely positive – and it offers up the kind of valuable message that every parent will want for their children. As the author herself observes: "The simplicity of a child's vision about their own future goals can open up new and exciting avenues, if only they are allowed to explore them."
Valerie Robinson Baker is a graduate of the interior design program at Ryerson University in Toronto. Her husband and son, who encouraged the creation of the Norman's World series, are her greatest cheerleaders.
