Consumers spent $6 billion on outdoor furnishings and accessories last year, and that amount is projected to grow by approximately 4% annually through 2013. Far from a mature industry, outdoor furnishings are outpacing the indoor furniture market in percentage growth figures and consumer desire indexing.

In fact, while only 5% of consumers surveyed said they had a home resort—defined as an outdoor area that’s been converted into a comfortable living space and is used for relaxing or entertaining at home—13% are in the process of creating one and a whopping 79% say they would love to design one, according to a recent study conducted by HGTV and Casual Living magazine. So with spring here, and summer right around the corner, Whitecraft has ways to make the most of the season and to enjoy time spent outdoors.

1.    Find more reasons to dine “al fresco.” Instead of having your kids and company trample through the house in wet bathing suits after a swim or fun in the sprinkler, bring lunch to them. Create a spontaneous “special occasion” with fresh berries or melon, an assortment of cheeses, easy-to-eat finger foods, and a fruit-infused tea or punch. All-weather outdoor dining tables offer an easy way to serve food while keeping the crowd outside and the cleanup to a minimum. Many of today’s outdoor dining groups, like Whitecraft’s “Bali” Table, are so weather resistant and easy to maintain, they make dining outdoors no chore at all. Dressed with festive tableware and machine washable linens, the mood is decidedly kicked back; bring out the more sophisticated dinnerware and the presentation turns decidedly more elegant. Either way, you’ve made it super simple for yourself and built a lasting memory for your family and friends.

2.    Take time to relax. You don’t need an expensive and time-consuming vacation to unwind. Take your vacation in the quiet solitude of your own home retreat. Turn off the phone, tune into the birdsongs, and lounge around on Whitecraft’s“Aruba” Outdoor Chaise Lounge. It’s the perfect opportunity to finish that book you’ve been reading, catch some rays, or lie around and gaze at the stars.

3.    Be the host. There are several benefits to hosting the party. You get to pick the day, the time, the drinks, and the menu. And talk about multitasking, an outdoor shindig is the perfect way to reciprocate for all those dinners, birthday parties, and carpool switch-arounds. Invite everyone who’s done you a favor or cooked you a meal. But be sure to have plenty of comfy seating, because once they see what a great host you are, your friends will want to stay until the wee hours. A great way to accommodate larger groups in a comfortable setting is with one or more outdoor sectional sofas. Many come with the ability to add on extra seats or chaise units. Paired with deep cushioned lounge chairs the conversation and good times will flow with ease. Shown here is the “Milan” Sectional Sofa from Whitecraft, available in a variety of configurations to suit your needs. If you live in a warmer climate, consider adding an outdoor approved fan or two to keep your guests cool and comfortable; cooler climates can benefit from the addition of a portable fire pit, which also doubles as the official marshmallow-roasting station.

So whether you want personal tranquility, family get-togethers, or room to entertain the neighborhood, take your life outdoors by creating the ideal outdoor room space filled with easy-care, durable, and great-looking furniture and accessories that speak to your design sensibility and needs. The outdoors is calling.
