Sober Living by the Sea’s unique sober college program allows individuals in long-term eating disorder or addiction treatment to continue their education while living in a supportive and supervised recovery environment.

Whether a patient is in their first month of recovery or has years of sobriety under their belt, the T.E.A.C.H. program can help them accomplish their educational goals.

For many people in early recovery, drug rehab opens their eyes to the pitfalls of their old lifestyle and the ways they can build a brighter future. Some choose to pursue a new career, some re-locate and some go back to school.

Sober Living by the Sea’s extended care program connects individuals in recovery who wish to further their education with a sober college program called “T.E.A.C.H.” The T.E.A.C.H. program allows people to continue their education while living in a supportive and supervised recovery environment.

Residents live in clean, comfortable single-gender accommodations located in the vibrant recovery community of Newport Beach, Calif. As part of their ongoing recovery work, residents participate in daily 12-Step meetings, relapse prevention classes, and workshops on relationship-building and healthy use of leisure time.

“Our patients are students by day, two to three days a week, and receive ongoing eating disorder or addiction treatment in the evenings,” said Kathleen Lilly, the T.E.A.C.H. program director.

The T.E.A.C.H. program is available to anyone in the Sober Living by the Sea extended care program, whether they are in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction or an eating disorder, and whether they completed primary treatment at a Sober Living by the Sea facility or another treatment center.

The T.E.A.C.H. program attracts people from all over the country and helps students at all academic levels, whether they are trying to earn their high school diploma or a GED, have completed some college courses, or are working toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

“Whether a patient is in their first month of recovery or has years of sobriety under their belt, the T.E.A.C.H. program can help them accomplish their educational goals,” said Lilly.

Academic counselors help create a plan that is right for each student and provide assistance every step of the way, from gathering and evaluating transcripts to setting goals for the next academic milestone. The T.E.A.C.H. sober college program also provides the following:

  •     Transcript Assistance
  •     Career Assessment Testing
  •     Individual Academic Advisor and Counselor
  •     Academic Tutoring
  •     Monitored Study Sessions
  •     Transportation Provided to Campus
  •     Accredited/Transferable Units
  •     State-of-the-Art Computer Lab

Each patient works with two case managers: a drug and alcohol counselor and a T.E.A.C.H. case manager who makes sure the patient is attending classes and completing their course work and provides tutoring and study sessions as needed.

Because of the T.E.A.C.H. program’s longstanding relationships with local colleges in Orange County, Calif., students are able to choose from a variety of colleges and programs, including Saddleback College, Orange Coast College and The Art Institute of California. Many students have gone on to prestigious four-year universities and earned advanced degrees.

With summer quickly approaching, the T.E.A.C.H. program has set summer session start dates of May 24, June 21 and July 6. In order to complete the full course, students should enroll by May 24.

“Summer is a great time to start the T.E.A.C.H. program,” said Lilly. “Students live in a beach house located just steps away from the sand in one of the most popular beach towns in southern California. While attending classes and maintaining their sobriety, patients can enjoy all the great sober activities this community has to offer.”
