Eco-preneurs launch campaign to spread message of sustainable wedding planning by promoting April as Greener Weddings Awareness Month.

Our goal with the timing is to integrate the 'sustainable weddings' message into the environmental campaigns happening for Earth Day in April, and its 40th anniversary this year

Dream Green Weddings in partnership with the Green Bride Guide announced this week the launch of an environmental awareness campaign in the wedding industry, which includes the promotion of April as Greener Weddings Awareness month.

According to TheWeddingReport.com, there were an estimated 2.2 million weddings in the United States in 2008. When you consider the average wedding produces 63 tons of CO2 and 400-600 pounds of trash, according to the Green Bride Guide, the impact on the planet is substantial. The goal of the Greener Weddings Awareness campaign in April is to educate engaged couples about the importance of making eco-friendly choices in the planning process to lessen the environmental impact of their wedding.

At the same time, the campaign encourages mainstream wedding vendors and the wedding industry to implement greener business practices. This is an initiative the Green Bride Guide has been leading with its launch of the first approved green wedding vendor directory and Green Wedding Professional Certification course.

The campaign is being primarily driven by social media marketing including Twitter, Facebook and bloggers who have an interest in promoting the message of sustainable wedding planning.

"Our goal with the timing is to integrate the 'sustainable weddings' message into the environmental campaigns happening for Earth Day in April, and its 40th anniversary this year," said Heather Teague, Founder of Dream Green Weddings. "Additionally, April is the start of the busy wedding season and offers a unique opportunity to spread this important message during a time of the year when people are talking about weddings and environmental issues."

Members of the wedding media, green media, bloggers and wedding vendors are all encouraged to join the Greener Weddings Awareness month campaign during April.
