Cadmus Communications, a Cenveo company, announced today the release of an automated XML-to-EPUB conversion service that will provide digital content to EPUB-compliant e-book devices, such as the Apple iPad, for the scholarly publishing community.
EPUB is an industry standard structure developed by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) that combines textual and rich media content in a single containerized format. While there are several device-specific e-book formats, EPUB is supported by many devices and computer applications. Apple has been the first company to specify EPUB as its preferred format for e-books for the much anticipated and finally available iPad.
Cadmus has developed an automated process to transform the NLM XML standard for the Scientific, Technical, and Medical community, based on the National Library of Medicine’s journal publishing and archiving DTDs, into the EPUB format. This conversion quickly and efficiently creates an e-book reader compliant product derived from the same content currently used for print and online deliverables. Publishers that have adopted the NLM DTDs as a means of maintaining content structure can now benefit from the automated process to expand the distribution channels for their valuable content.
The automated transformation of NLM XML to EPUB allows publishers to leverage and extend the reach of their content with significantly reduced cost and time to market. While Cadmus has delivered content for digital devices in a number of formats for many years, this initiative fulfills a long-stated goal of providing standards-based solutions that are highly automated, flexible and efficient.
John Grinnell, Cadmus’ Executive Vice President, stated, “Standards-based solutions tie together content creation, dissemination and production in a way that is predictable, efficient and reliable. By building on the foundation of an NLM XML workflow, we can adapt quickly to changes in technology and end user needs. For Publishers, it means the ability to rapidly and cost-effectively deploy new products that meet their end-users’ demand for reusable, portable content.”
