AWLP Announces 2010 Work-Life Innovative Excellence Award Recipients

Alliance for Work-Life Progress (AWLP) at WorldatWork recently announced the recipients of its 2010 Work-Life Innovative Excellence Award. Established in 1996, the Work-Life Innovative Excellence Award is the highest honor bestowed by AWLP, to recognize organizations that have successfully aligned work-life initiatives with business objectives.

The awards will be given at a ceremony to be held May 18 at the annual WorldatWork Total Rewards Conference and Exhibition (Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center, Grapevine, TX).

This year's honorees are: Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), Clerk & Comptroller of Palm Beach County, and United States Navy.

Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) – Caring for the Community Program
Hospital Corporation of America's Caring for the Community program engages employees by encouraging their charitable passions. The alignment in 2009 of paid time off and giving back is the latest offering in HCA's long tradition of caring for the community.

An employee may take up to 24 hours of paid volunteer leave each year. When the employee adds just one more hour of personal time, HCA provides a $500 contribution to that organization in recognition of the 25 hours donated. HCA added to this, a giving campaign match of up to $750 to a charity of the employee's choice. This powerful combination allows an employee to take time off from work to volunteer at a charity, and direct as much as $2,000 of personal and corporate giving to that charity.

Clerk & Comptroller, Palm Beach County – We're All in This Together
When forced to slash millions from its budget and reduce its workforce by more than 100 employees, the Clerk & Comptroller, Palm Beach County, created the "We're All in This Together" transition program. Its goals were to minimize the impact of such dramatic changes by maintaining transparent, ongoing communications with employees; upholding employees' sense of empowerment and inclusion; and treating separating and remaining workers fairly and respectfully.

For separating employees, the organization provided an on-site job fair and transition workshops covering job-hunting, professional development, financial assistance and educational opportunities.

For remaining employees, there was a rebuilding/stabilization initiative that included a post-layoff period to adjust to the new environment, cross-training for new responsibilities, a "Clerk Kudos" recognition program and the implementation of the first "Employee Appreciation Dress Down Day." As a result, employees gave the organization high marks in their first post-layoff employee survey.

U.S. Navy – Task Force Life/Work (TFLW) Initiative
With a shrinking skilled labor market and changing generational attitudes toward work, the U.S. Navy is not only focused on attracting, developing and retaining the best talent our Nation has to offer, but also recognizing the changing attitudes toward work from our Millennials. Navy has committed itself to implementing an innovative work/life integration effort throughout the organization to drive change.

Since 2007, Navy's "Task Force Life Work" (TFLW) has led that change through new policies and programs designed to promote greater flexibility and balance between life and work. From off-ramp/on-ramps, telework, flex/compressed schedules, paid paternity leave, and adoption leave to one-year operational deferment for new moms, new child care centers, social media forums and e-mentoring opportunities –TFLW has taken "words to action" and positioned Navy as a "Top 50" employer. Senior leadership's vision and personal commitment to further innovations will lead continued organizational change.
