The House Designers and ENERGY STAR® present the first-ever Green Home Plan Competition inviting all eco-friendly, residential home building manufacturers to submit green products to be specified on the winning blueprints.
"We came up the idea for the first-ever THD/ENERGY STAR® Green Home Plan Competition to promote our green initiative with ENERGY STAR® to build healthy, affordable and energy efficient homes that incorporate green building techniques and eco-friendly products," said Tammy Crosby, COO of The House Designers, the internets leading provider of residential stock house plans.
All plans chosen have to qualify as "Designed to Earn the ENERGY STAR®, which means they include requirements for the energy-efficient features and construction details typically found in ENERGY STAR® qualified homes -- tight construction and duct systems, properly installed insulation, high performance windows, efficient heating and cooling equipment, and ENERGY STAR® qualified lighting and appliances.
The following products will be specified directly on the construction documents with specified manufacturer's details to ensure that every new design qualifies as an ENERGY STAR® house plan:
- High efficiency air conditioners without HCFC
- Insulated vinyl siding

ABOUT ENERGY STAR®
ENERGY STAR® was introduced by EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. Today, the ENERGY STAR® label can be found on more than 50 different kinds of products as well as buildings and new homes. Products that have earned the ENERGY STAR®, prevent greenhouse gas emissions by meeting strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the government. In 2007 alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR®, saved $16 billion on their energy bills while reducing greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 27 million vehicles.
