A year ago this month, an established UK white water rafting company set up a base in Marrakech organising rafting expeditions down the Ourika River as well as a range of other adventure activities. The company, Splash, has been taking groups down the challenging rapids of Scotland’s rivers for many years, as well as arranging rafting trips on some of the world’s most beautiful and exhilarating rivers.
They have been amazed by the phenomenal success of their Moroccan venture, and the number of customers has increased tenfold in the first year, surpassing all expectations. A new twice-weekly Ryanair flight from Edinburgh to Marrakech, starting in May, will make it even easier to reach, and keep flight costs competitive. As well as supervised rafting trips with professional guides and top quality equipment, Splash offers canyoning, overland tours, hot air ballooning, quad bikes and much more.
“I had a feeling that there was enough demand to justify setting up a base in Morocco, and we are leading the way in this relatively new market” says Peter Syme, Managing Director of Splash. “The majority of our customers are people who want to make the most of the Moroccan scenery during their holiday, or who want a group activity which combines action adventure with an exotic location and sunny climate. We organise a lot of stag and hen parties who come here from the UK.”
Flights to Marrakech are only 3 hours from the UK, making it very accessible for short trips as well as longer holidays. The Splash operation includes arranging every aspect of an adventure holiday such as accommodation, transport, entertainment and activities. The local Moroccan market is expanding too and Splash often takes local groups white water rafting, as well as recruiting and training Moroccan guides.
Visitors to Marrakech often hear about Splash and decide on the spur of the moment to go on one of their adventure activities. Word of mouth has helped increase business, as has an excellent relationship with local guides and tour operators. With a day’s rafting in the Ourika Valley costing around £60, including pick up and drop off in Marrakech, It’s an excellent way to get close to nature, see ancient Berber villages, and explore the stunning, unspoilt landscape of the Atlas Mountains.
White water rafting expeditions in Scotland and Morocco are the company’s core activities, but they also arrange regular trips to over 13 other countries and offer a host of exciting outdoor adventure activities.
