Houston (PRWEB) April 9, 2010
As Heroes for Children (HFC), a Texas-based organization that provides financial and social assistance to families with a child battling cancer, prepares for its 3rd Annual Heroes & Handbags fundraiser at River Oaks Country Club on April 16, handbag designer Elaine Turner prepares a donation of handbags for auction along with a speech for the award she and her company will receive after years of contribution to the organization and its signature event.
Ms. Turner and Elaine Turner Designs have been chosen as the 2010 recipient of the “Spirit of Allie and Taylor Award” given annually by HFC in memory of Allie Scott and Taylor Brewton; HFC daughters who lost their battles with cancer at eight months and four years, and inspired the creation of the organization. Elaine Turner earns this recognition for her efforts to further the mission of HFC to make an immediate impact on the lives of families with a child battling cancer. Her contributions over the last five years to Heroes & Handbags has helped the event raise more than $750,000 and counting with this year’s event yet to come.
“HFC is honored to have Elaine Turner’s support and ongoing contribution,” said Jenny Scott, HFC co-founder and mother of Allie Scott. “Her contribution to our organization has allowed us to continue our unique programs that support the entire family of a child battling cancer, from HFC Laptops for Love, to our special Valentine’s Dinner.”
Recognized as the most significant contributor to HFC’s Heroes & Handbags, Elaine Turner Designs specially designed bags in honor of Taylor and Allie. The bags were added to the Elaine Turner 2008 collection as well as auctioned off in every year at the Heroes and Handbags event with all of the profits going directly to Heroes for Children.
“Jenny and Larissa are a true inspiration to me: they chose to turn their loss into something positive to help others. That’s what motivated my company and me to get involved. We feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to partner with Heroes for Children over the years and contribute towards their mission to assist families in need. Our experience with Heroes for Children has added more joy, meaning and fulfillment to our business and our lives,” said Elaine Turner.
The annual Heroes & Handbags luncheon and silent auction will be held on April 16, 2010 at River Oaks Country Club in Houston. The event features a seated brunch, silent auction of designer and vintage handbags and is the largest fundraiser for the organization. Funds raised at Heroes & Handbags benefit families with children battling cancer by alleviating their financial needs so they can focus on the care of their child.
About Heroes for Children:
Heroes for Children provides financial and social assistance to families within the state of Texas with children battling cancer. Cancer treatment can include chemotherapy, radiation, surgeries and numerous clinic visits which can last between six months and three years. The costs associated with a child’s cancer treatment often reach from $600,000 to over $1 million, often exceeding lifetime maximum benefits for families with health insurance plans. Many families face mounting bills at home and must take unpaid leave throughout their child’s treatment. Heroes for Children provides direct financial assistance to these families. The average gift of $750 brings much-needed relief to families with burdensome expenses, including mortgage/rent payments, utilities, car payments, or funeral costs for children who have lost the battle with cancer. Heroes for Children provides more than $30,000 in direct financial assistance each month. This assistance allows many families to stay afloat while they focus on their child’s health.
