Highest Rate in Over a Year is Attributed to Growing Botnet Activity Worldwide

Through this report, we hope to convey the importance of advertising with ad networks and search engines that partner with third-parties such as Anchor to certify their traffic quality.

Anchor Intelligence, the leading provider of traffic quality solutions, today released the Anchor Intelligence Traffic Quality Report: Q1 2010. In the first quarter of 2010, the Anchor Intelligence network saw the average attempted click fraud rate rise from 25.7% in Q4 2009 to 29.2% in Q1 2010, representing a 34% year-over-year increase from Q1 2009. Anchor Intelligence attributes this record attempted click fraud rate to two major factors: higher-than-average attempted click fraud rates among new Anchor customers and dramatic growth in botnet scale and volume around the globe.

In addition to the network-level rates, Anchor Intelligence also reported traffic quality rates for the top 30 countries by traffic volume. The countries with the highest attempted click fraud rates were Vietnam (35.4%), Australia (35.2%), and the U.S. (35.0%). The majority of this traffic was the result of high velocity botnet traffic and coordinated click fraud rings. This increase in botnet-perpetrated click fraud also caused a dramatic upsurge in attempted click fraud in the U.K., from 18% in Q4 to 32% in Q1.

This spike in botnet activity across the Anchor Intelligence network is consistent with other accounts of nefarious activity originating from compromised computers around the world. Recent reports from McAfee and Google identified a surge in cyber attacks against blogs criticizing mining projects in Vietnam. Furthermore, in December and January, over thirty companies were targeted by cyber attacks originating from China that were designed to steal personal data from corporate networks.

“As Internet usage has grown in countries lacking appropriate cybersecurity measures, more and more computers have become infected with malware and used as click fraud zombies,” said Ken Miller, CEO of Anchor Intelligence. “Through this report, we hope to convey the importance of advertising with ad networks and search engines that partner with third-parties such as Anchor to certify their traffic quality.”

Anchor Intelligence’s ClearMark for Traffic enables buyers and sellers to better manage their traffic quality and capture and deliver more value to advertisers. By providing traffic quality scores per ad event in real time, ClearMark enables ad sellers to address attempted click fraud before advertisers are affected. Moreover, by eliminating payouts to fraudulent perpetrators, ClearMark reduces click fraud attempts for Anchor customers as perpetrators seek more vulnerable networks to exploit.
